A buddy of mine is looking to get a semi-auto duck gun. His budget is around $1000. Currently he's looking at the Remington Versamax.

Do you have any suggestions/comments on that gun or any other in that price range? I'm certain that if a bit more money could get him a better gun, he'd go for it.

Thanks!

I have a versamax have not had a chance to shoot it yet but the fit and finish is Remington QC deficient. But as for the gas system it looks pretty neat. The gun fits great and looks decent. Over-sized trigger group and safety for wearing heavy gloves when hunting is nice.
The front sight locating pin is slightly offset from the centre of the rib. Not a big issue will see after it is patterned. Has alot of fit adjustment bit more than the FN (Browning, Winchester) guns.

If he does buy a versamax make sure he tells the gun shop or if he buys it used to call gravale in Quebec and get the updated mag tube retainer/ mag nut (they send/ship it for free). The original style does not stay tight. The new style locks the nut on the inner diameter of the nut called the Power-lock.

I don't think it will beat my SX3 though. The SX3 is at a high quality standard for its price point.

Oh and the Versamax is selling for roughly $400 lower than its MSRP. If that says anything.
But a better gun than say the cheapo stuff like: weatherby, baikal, Mossberg.

Hard to beat a X3 or browning maxus. Either one would be my choice and I love remingtons but the versamax has not earned it's tail feathers to me just yet. It may someday but not today :)

Any new semi-auto will do the job. Lots of older, used ones will do the job. Buying a gun is a very personal thing. He's got to like the gun and it's got to fit him.

I wouldn't be spending that kind of money on anything Remington these days....

SX3 would probably be my choice as well.

I totally agree with you, I stay totally away from Remington's now.

If you look at the sx3 look for last years model I'm pretty sure this years don't have the dura coat for whatever reason anymore.

I try to stick with my b's ( Brownings, berettas and benellis ) for shotguns atleast !! You can usually get a used browning or beretta for a price around 1000!!

Used Winchester SX2 or Browning Gold.

Or if you're happy with 2 3/4, a nice old Browning A5 and open the barrel up from full to modified. Shouldn't need three-inch for ducks anyway.

I have hunted waterfowl, with a versa max two seasons now ,, very pleased , the gun will eat anything you feed it even one ounce target loads , soft recoil ,easy to clean

Well I still love my good ol Remington 870 Wingmaster, but I bought a Browning Maxus in MOBD 2 seasons ago. Needless to say my Wingmaster has not seen any shells since... Poor thing must be hungry! Lol

Anything Browning is good
Winchester X3 is a Browning design
Benelli are both fine
Heard the Frainchi is having jamming problems no a guy who bought two for his sons and took them both back
Forget the Baikal mp153 Biggest Piece of Sh8t I own,
Heard the Remingtons 11- 87 are having problems, But the Versa max is supposed to be ok
I see CZ is making a nice auto and their quality is usually pretty good

My buddy shoots a Mossberg and it's seem good
and my other buddy bought a Stoeger ( benelli design) he loves it.

Stoegers are probably one of the best guns in that price range, you can grab the p350 pumps for 300 bucks! I used a Stoeger before i upgraded to my berettas and I don't have a single bad thing to say about them
