I received the 22'' Norc a couple weeks ago now and finally got around to giving a good cleaning and examination.

I noticed that when the bolt is in the closed position I could move it back and forth about a millimeter. After noticing this I immediately checked my Norc shorty to see if it did the same.

It doesn't so do I have a problem here? I certainly don't know a whole lot about guns, but would I be wrong to assume this would indicate that my rifle probably doesn't have safe headspacing?

thanks,

Not a big issue as these rifles were designed to have larger tolerances there so they will operate when dirty, cold etc.

I'd say you got lucky with the one that wasn't wiggling. As long as the bolt rotates shut and achieves minimum headspace I'd say you are good to go. If you've been shooting the shorty and it hasn't exploded, you have most likely proven it has at least the minimum headspace.

If only one lug was bearing, I think you would get more wear on that side and your headspace would open over time until you got even contact between both lugs - a self lapping rifle whoo hoo. In my (sarc on) broad experience lurking these forums (sarc off) and handling/shooting a half dozen Norc I've never heard of one exploding due to a bolt seating malfunction. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had a first hand experience of this.

P.s. Just got back from Hungry's Burlington clinic and his personal rifle with a Norc bolt has negligible wiggle. Apparently headspaced 5 thou. above spec. while my Norc headspaced at 17 thou. above spec. (versus 25 thou. Max).

Gah! He had a Clinic in Burlington??? Dang! I would have gone

Picked up a Polytech and I got some wiggle too. Glad this post came up, I had similar concerns ; )

Was a good clinic learned allot... Same thing about my two bolts they did have a little slop but not bad at all.

It was announced on our club web site and in the training forums here and at other web sites....

It was a great course with a fun bunch of students. I've attended one and hosted 2 and I'm still learning a tonne of tricks, tweaks and things to avoid.
