9mm P226 - .40 Cal

I have a P226 in 9mm. I also have the .22LR conversion kit. If I wish to shoot .40 Cal, what do I require? Can I just get a .40Cal barrel and magazine? I have the mags because I use them exclusively for 9mm so I hope I just need the barrel.

from all the reading that I have done, if you want to be able to both you need to buy a .40 cal and then get the 9mm barrel. Sorry looks like you are out of luck.

'You'll need a complete upper to go from 9mm to .40 S&W with your 226. The 9mm breachface is too small to accept the .40 case head.

Not sure if that is correct. You will essentially need a new slide as well. At that rate you might as well just but another gun

+1 for conversion kit. You can go from 40 to 9 with a conversion barrel and mags only but not the other way around; the 40 barrel is wider.
 
Ok so I have all 3 slides/barrels for the p226

The outer diameter of the 9 and 40 are the same, the 40 has thinner barrel walls.

I put the 9 barrel in the 40 slide and the 40 barrel in the 9 slide and both seem to fit.

Now the 40 slide has the longer extractor and the 9 has the original short one.

I have not fired with the slides/barrels swapped, might have issues with the different extractors possibly?

I know people are suggesting a conversion barrel, but I think that only applies to a glock

I did some more reading and found this post from 2008 on another board:

If you get the larger (.357/.40) from the onset, you only need to get the conversion barrel and mags to shoot 9mm. If you start with the 9mm set up, you WILL have to get a slide as well. The reason is that the slide dimensions are more robust for the larger calibers due to pressures and recoil forces generated by the rounds. The standard 9mm slide will not stand up to the forces as they have not been designed to and thus do not have the strength and integrity to do so.

however I cannot tell any difference between my 9 and 40 slide other than the extractor

It has to specifically be a "Conversion barrel" which has the same outside dimension as a 40cal but the inner of a 9mm. Rethinking I can't remember if this applies to GLOCK or SIGs or both.. google time!
