Cooey Model 600 Help

Hey guys,

I posted this in the gunsmithing section as well, but I figured it might get more traffic here.

My brother and I were cleaning an old Cooey model 600 and since removing the bolt is a bugger, we were cleaning from the muzzle towards the breach. We pushed the brass brush through to the chamber, and when we tried to pull it back through, it came out of its crimp and is now stuck half in the breach, have in the barrel.

Does this happen often? I guess we'll have to unseat the entire barrel assembly to remove the bolt and try to pull it out from that direction now.

Any tips for cleaning these rifles?
 
Bugger! Whatever you've done, try to figure out which direction the bristles are turned. If they are oriented towards the muzzle, you've got to work out the brush that way.

I have no idea how to get the bolt out either. Anyone?
 
To remove the bolt, you take the stock off and where the screw attaches for the stock there is a flat head bolt with the center drilled and threaded for the stock screw. You back that off and the magtube will drop down just slightly allowing the bolt to clear and come right out. Very easy on the old cooey's.

^^This. There is a 'sweet spot' when tightening the bolt/screw. Remember that the mag tube should move freely when cocking the action. You don't need to tighten the screw down so much that the mag tube won't budge.

But you have to make sure that its tight enough to feed properly.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, we took the barrel assembly out of the stock and the little nut you guys are talking about to loosen off the magazine does not exist. There is a threaded sleeve that the screw was in, but it doesn't contact anything to do with the magazine... any more ideas?
 
That sleeve shouild have slots in it for a screwdriver, back it out to allow the mag tube to drop.
How about a pic?
I have been told that when Winchester bought out Cooey they changed the model # from 60 to 600, along with a few other small changes, including the piece that the stock mounting screw fits into and the trigger guard.
I have one of each, a model 60 and a model 600.

Talk slow, think fast.
 
Look at the piece that holds the magazine tube assembly up against the bolt. It has to be backed off, to allow the bolt to be removed. There are a few variations.
If you remove the bolt, will you be aqble to grab what is sticking out of the chamber?
I'd be inclined to use a good fitting rod, and tap the remains of the brush back out of the barrel.
 
Thanks everyone, we were able to disassemble the rifle entirely and grab the brush with some pliers and yank it out. It really seemed like the brush was way too tight for the barrel. Since we don't have a gun vice, it required me to be bracing the rifle with most of my body weight, while my brother pushed the rod/brush through (before it got stuck). This was a Dewey .22 brush from Wholesale that he bought on Saturday.
