Whats the story on the 9.3X62 in Canada?

Prvi 286gr recovered from a mule deer. This ammo grouped better than the Norma or RWS.

From my experience, the PPU bullets are good, but tend to lose their core whent the hit hard. If I comare it, I got better terminal perfromance with the Speer HC 270 gr.
The Norma and Lapua bullets are all good.
By these days, I got so good results in most of my rifles with the Nosler AB that it's hard not to use it. The nose tends to "explode" while the rear mushrooms perfectly and remains a lot of it's original weight.
The Barnes TSX 250 also gave me really good results on bear last year.

Anyhow, I don't think there are bad bullets for this caliber.

you sum up the 9,3 story.

This thread is trouble and I may have to report it to the moderators! The last thing that I need is another rifle :) I love the old FN Mauser actioned rifles such as the Huskies, etc. Now perhaps a 9.3 with nice wood and a Leopold 3x in quick detachable mounts would be a useful addition. Oh no... Anyone interested a nice pre-64 model 70 Winchester in. 338-06 AI with a Ron Smith barrel and custom dies?

I wish that there were more reasonable options for nice classic wood stocks for the old '98s, and I'm partial to the classic old Rigby checking patterns. A good glass bedding job and a cross bolt to finish off the piece. Must resist...

Why not get Ron to rebore your barrel? There'd be nothing wrong with an x62 on a pre-64. I wonder if the x62 would clean up the AI shoulder or if your have to set the barrel back. If only you'd know how cool the x62 was when you built!

Resistance is futile.

My new Zastava in x62 is sitting in some postal facility here in Calgary and I'm going to have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to get it. Hurry up already, my trigger finger is itchy!

Anyone care to shed some light on the different scope bases that can be used on these rifles? I saw two different sets of numbers for Weaver bases. I'm not going to scope this right away but just curious. Found the #'s 55 & 20a or 45 & 46.

Cheeseburger,

on both of mine it's 55 and 20a ...

all the best.

Well, on all those I have / had, I used the 46 front and 45 rear. The difference will be the height of the bases. 20A is pretty thin and will mount a tad lower.

Well, my Zastava 9.3x62 left handed has arrived from Trade-ex! Lots of packing grease to get rid of but she looks good. I was complaining about the stock but Tony assured me that the stock looked better in person than the image on line and he was right, while this stock won't be winning any glamour contest she isn't the ugly duckling that she looked like in the image. Having never shouldered this model before, I find the Monte Carlo to be a bit much for me. I have a bit of a long neck and am forced to mash my cheek weld down hard to get the sights to line up, so I may have to reprofile the Monte Carlo a bit. Trigger is very heavy out the box but that should be fixed up by the trigger adjustment screws. Thanks to pbonura for sending me the trigger adjustment instructions created by Freyr_255. The recoil pad is very firm so I think I will be putting a grind to fit Limbsaver on. If anyone has any advice regarding this rifle and calibre, I'm all ears. This is my first Mauser action and more importantly to this thread, my first 9.3x62.

Cheers.

Tyler, be sure to shoot it before replacing the pad. You don't want the pad to be too soft, and you are going to find the recoil of the '62 is quite manageable.

Looking forward to a range report! :)

I'd take her to a dance, once I turned her inside out.
Looks decent enough.
Air board to the big bump to flatten it out?
Now you know why some have the extra high scope rings.
Glad you're not disappointed in the new gal.
Targets posted once you get this far.

Buster; That's personal, but I prefer the one piece bases when they're available (for the Zastava use STD-FN 49988). That way there are less possiblities for mis-alignment.

The problem with the one piece base setup has always been that the full recoil impulse is handled by the front ring alone. That is why they loosen up on heavy recoiling rifles. The one piece base also makes charging the magazine a bit more cumbersome.

They are handy for misaligned screw holes, of course, but I would be surprised if that is a problem in a new Zastava.

Ted - Yes, I will shoot it with the stock butt pad on there and see how I do with it. The problem is going to be finding time to get to the range, work and school have me pretty tied up.

Looky - Yes the sander may have to come out on the stock as we have discussed. It is incredibly difficult to get the sights to line up as I can't get my eye down low enough.

Kayaker - Thanks for that, I did read that in the booklet that came with it but didn't understand why.

Baribal - I think I will be going with the Weaver's. What rings are you using? This is all a ways off as I haven't even decided nor bought the scope that I will mount on it.

Interesting note on the one piece bases, Ted. Learn something new everyday, it makes sense when you think about the physics involved. Plus, I think the one piece base will ruin the classic look of these rifles.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming, this thread is already a great resource for someone like myself getting started on the x62.
