I have been shooting my Model 1400 for a few years now in Sporting Clays without problems - until yesterday.
The gun did not fire, and the bolt could not be locked in the open breech position.
I have been reading up on problems on many sites, but have not found one describing the problem.
I did find a post which indicated that there could be problems with the firing pin becoming detached and breaking.
I have a Schematic, the Manual, and videos describing stripping and reassembly, but wht I have not found is a description of how the gun works in relation to details.

Can anyone advise me of the possible problem and a solution.

I have previously stripped it for cleaning but I do not want to dismantle it until i have a few clues.

All suggestions are welcome.

It will have to be taken apart to be correctly diagnosed. If you don't feel you are enough of a 'gunsmith' to do this, I suggest taking it to a shop familiar with 1400's. I think they were discontinued in the early 90's. Parts may not be easy to find... but you will have to take it apart first...

I would take it down and give it a good cleaning. Its been a while but I had trouble with mine, gas piston and cylinder were dirty and corroded, cleaned up with Hoppes and fine steel wool and problem solved. takedown instructions are online.

X 2. Most problems encountered with these guns is usually due to fouling; and are usually fixed with a good cleaning.

The Cocking Handle Bridge holds the Firing Pin in place. There may be a sheared Cocking Handle Bridge Retaining Screw.

Thanks Lodi, thats the best suggestion so far. I have stripped many pump shotguns before and have stripped this one for cleaning before, so am happy to do it, but there is nothing like past experience.
I now have two clues
1. Firing Pin dislodged and
2 Breech Block Screw.

Keith

You have to remove the bridge screw to take inners out of the gun. If it is broken the firing pin and spring will have exited the bolt to the rear. A broken feed throat may cause the problem too.

In the time you have used to post here you could completely stripped the action and diagnosed the problem. It's a very simple action.
