I am looking for some stats using Varget, and a Speer 100 gr hollowpoint Varmint round.

I have WIN mag primers. Im looking for the OAL, (i have 3.175" written down) and confirm Varget is 48.5-53 gr.

If anyone has the brass size length, that would be appreciated, i dont know where i got he numbers from

and want to double check, calibre is 270 (.277 projectiles)

the game im after is Coyote (big ones, more wolf sized).

Thanks, :)

I love the Speer 100gr hollow points in my 270 and have played with them more than any other bullet. Very devistating performance. I load 59 grains of H4350 and that gives me 3400fps and sub moa accuracy. 51 grains of Varget got me just over 3300 fps and grouped ok for hunting (1.25" @ 100yards). Varget is also $10 less per pound. 57 grains of IMR4350 was also sub moa in my gun and just under 3300 fps but same price as H4350.

Edit: load them to whatever fits your mag. 3.15" or longer. I load mine to 3.26"

Was going to go with 50 gr of powder, so will try 51gr. I'm going to try some today, and have 3.17" OAL for old data. Just double checking. Also using magnum primers (WIN).

Thanks!

From the Speers #14 Manual
270 Win Max case lengh 2.54" Trim to lengh 2.53"
100gr Hollow point with Varget COAL 3.1"
Start load 51gr Varget 3186 FPS Max load 55gr 3436 FPS

I believe this will not have any problems tipping over even the big dogs.Hope this helps. G

so 51 grains Varget, we will leave it at that (middle of upper/lower))
COAL of 3.20" it will be. I had a 3.17" but cant find the source. I get 3.10" from post 7, so will add a bit to 3.20"/
The factory SP are 3.36", so should not be hitting the lands, or be too compressed (giving high pressures).

Thanks again!

I don't know how much reloading experience you have so take this with a grain of salt, but if I were you I would make a case with a neck that was just snug and insert a bullet into it and load it into your rifle to find the max COAL for that rifle then I would back it .005 off the lands and develope the load from there. It may however not fit in your magazine or the bullet might not be seated deep enough into the cases to hold properly. You will see once you test your chamber lengh. If you are not developing a load and rather just building some rounds then I would use the recommended (Manual) COAL of 3.1".

Ya, good idea. BUT, Already loaded 18 rounds of 51-52 gr Varget and COAL of 3.17". So not far off. I have 4 rounds left in .270 factory, so want to reload, since i have all the dies, powders bullets anyways. I can Re-seat if its tight. (and I do thank you for the tip, i have seen it in the .223).

I have plenty of .223 factory to shoot at coyote, 60 gr Nosler. Scary when coyote (eastern with wolf cross) are moving in, and there are kids playing. The workers see them daily in the summer, with a 1 mile deep lot, there is plenty of rabbit for them to eat (fox, skunk, possum, coon, rats etc.) They have been as close as 50 feet from our bedroom window, especially in winter. Saw the tracks next day. See new tracks every day, maybe 300 meters from house. 3 dens located half mile away (probably lots more). marked with tape.

I used to load mine with 52 grains Varget but have since reduced to 48 grains. Reason was I can now see the impacts when shooting off a bipod in the field! Within 200 yards its accurate enough for gophers, any farther and I switch to the 110 grain Vmax loads.

Hands down these are the most devastating small game bullets I've ever loaded for any of my rifles! Shooting gophers in a snowy field is highly entertaining!

My 270 varmint load is 60gr of H4831 under a 110gr V-max. Spits them out at about 3050fps and is super accurate. I don't really use it for varmints. I use my 223 with 53gr Vmax over 26gr of benchmark (3200fps). The 223 load has flattened many coyotes at over 200 yards. I'm really impressed with the terminal performance of the v-max bullets and they have proven to be very accurate in both my rifles and the added bonus of high BC. Just for giggles I shot some of my 223 load into some milk jugs last night. I had three jugs lined up full of water. The 53 grain V-max did not penetrate the first jug and all I could find in the snow was tiny peices of copper jacket. I also tried my 50gr Varmint Grenade. The VG went throught the first jug and I found the base and some other peices in the second jug. I think the VG is the most over hyped bullet ever.

will remember that, so far, i have
1) factory Remington 55 gr Premier Accutip
2)- factory Win 55 gr Ballistic silver tip
3) factory 60 gr Nosler Ballistic
4) 200 rounds of Hornady VMAX bullets, 55 gr
5) 200 rounds Hornady sxsp 55 gr
6) 100 rounds Sierra 69 gr BTHP

lots to choose from for yotes!

Gman
Do you think a 100gr bullet is going to make it all the way to the lands in a 270 and still be seated in the brass?

My 110 V-max do and they have a boat tail. That is why I said "It may however not fit in your magazine or the bullet may not be seated deep enough into the case to hold properly".
That is why you have to try it and see. It really does depend on the bullet and the chamber. You don't know unless you try.

Hmm, my very limited experience with the VG is very different from yours. I also shoot 53 gr vmax in a .223 and just started playing with barnes 50gr Varmint grenades. This past weekend I filled several 500ml drinking bottles and a few 4l washer jugs with water to do some testing(playing). The 53gr vmax had very distinct entry and exit holes in both the 500ml and 4l containers with considerable plastic deformation on the exit side from hydrostatic shock. The varmint grenades on the other hand showed a clean entry hole with the back sides of the containers completely obliterated. The VG appear to have much more dramatic terminal performance. I find the Vmax more accurate though.

Edit: I agree that the 110 gr Vmax is about the best light bullet for the .270!

Any one of those will flatten coyotes. All you have to do is go to the range and find the one that shoots the best. Coyotes are a smaller than they look. If you knock the fur off of them you will see the effective kill spot on them is about 6 inches or maybe a bit bigger in your case. I personally would not shoot at one more than 300 yards away and that would be on a good day with a bipod and a rifle that shoots moa. If you have a rifle that shoots 2 inch groups at 100 yards you can be Dead Eye #### on the trigger, but you will miss a coyote at 300.

I see a lot of dead coyotes in your future. Good luck. I`m dealing with the same type of situation (three coyotes in one week end 50 yards from the house) so I feel for ya.
