Hello there,

I bought a sporterized Mauser on the EE last week. It doesnt have a bolt with it. Its very nice, however, I tried several 98 and VZ mauser bolts and non will close on it, even with an empty chamber! Any advice? It reall looks like a VZ24. the sporterized stock is identical to a VZ24 stock, the front sight too, Its entirely scubber except for the serial number and a british import marking near the tip of the barrel (saying 7,92mm tons etc etc). I'll try to post some picture later. all the bolts I tried half close on an empty chamber. An 8mm dummy round fits perfectly in the chamber.

thanks

JP

Maybe its a Yugo mauser? I know the actions are shorter by a little bit on those. This would lead me to believe the bolt would also be a small amount shorter. 1/4" comes to mind?

Not all Mausers can take the same bolt. The Turkish 1903s and Yugo M48s have intermediate length actions and their bolts are not interchangable with, for example, a Kar98k.

Pictures would help figure out which type of action you have.

Here's a few pictures , hope somebody can help. I use to have a yougo Mauser, a vz24, and K98s, this look like a VZ24, but not the markings :

It could very well be a Polish mauser, lots of them were completely scrubbed. I do believe a K98 bolt should fit though. A picture or two of the front sight could narrow it down further.

If the bolt will "half close" then it's probably not an intermediate action. There is a significant difference in length, and a standard bolt would not come anywhere near to closing, and there should be a substantial gap between the bolt handle, the shroud, and the rear receiver ring.

Mauser bolts were not strictly interchangeable, and you may have to do a lot of experimenting to get one that will fit. Even at that, you will still have to have the headspace verified.

Belgian mauser perhaps ? The rear sight calibrations suggest post WW1, perhaps the 1930s. The proof marks look to be commercial in origin, maybe she was a military mauser that was scrubbed and rebuilt into a sporting rifle.

The action does look standard 98 pattern. Bolt fitting can be tricky. Even after you find one that works with our action, you may be running into head space issues.

Seeing as how the sights don't start at 300m I'd say its not a vz 24.
Good point!

I think Nabs may be on the right track with the Belgian part. A lot of the Belgian made mausers start off at the 200 mark. Yugo's as well but since the op stated that the action length was the same as a regular M98 I don't think this is what he has.

Are there any markings on the under side of the receiver?

This thing has to have been scrubbed at some point and renumbered. It looks like it had some serious pitting along the wood line at one point possibly. I agree the finish on it is pretty rough.

The 16698 looks to be wakly stamped or else partly-ground. Number looks better on the barrel: not ground.

Proof marks are LONDON Proof House.

I note the B on the left-upper surface of the Receiver Ring, wonder if this is original to the rifle. Anything start with B? Or is it post-scrub?

most likely a Yugo mauser , you will need to try the shorter bolt.

Questlon for the OP: when you put the bolt in, ( any bolt ) are you able to rotate it closed at all, or are you saying it will fit into the raceways but not rotate? If you were fitting a standard length bolt into an intermediate action, the 3rd safety lug wouldn't be able to engage in it's slot, and you wouldn't be able to rotate the bolt at all.

Picture of the inside of the receiver from behind and slightly above would tell us a little more about the bolt configuration.

I had a byf k98 rebarreled into .375 H&H from Century and that rifle wouldn't take a bolt from a stock 7.92x57 rifle.
