280ai on a budget

you live in saskatchewan, what do you know about mountain hunting. I grew up hunting on a trapline in the Yukon. I asked about building a rifle, you're not helping

I want the 280ai because I'd be reloading and if I can save a 1/3 of the powder and get within a couple hundred fps of the 7mm mag than why not? also I like to be different haha. btw why are all the 280's out there on 22" barrels?

If you like to be different, then great. But you will be burning +50gr of powder vs +60gr of powder in a 7mm RM. And really, what difference does that small amount of powder make? You save about $0.05 per shot. My friend has a .30-06 AI and wishes he would have just kept it a regular .30-06 and avoid the hassle of fireforming. There was a fine Remington KS in 7mm RM in the ee recently, for less than $1000. Those came with either a Brown Precision or a McMillan stock. IMO just about a perfect combo for the mountains.

The response to this should be good. :)

I need advice on a rifle. If i needed advice on sheep hunting I would have asked.

Remington 700 Alaskan TI 270 WSM
Remington model 7 7mm-08
Tikka 270
Kimber 300 wsm
Winchester Feather weight 7mm-08
Sako Finnlight 270 wsm
Weatherby Vanguard 11 257 Wby
Weatherby ultra light weight 257 Wby

ok sounds good. I like the montana and the remington mnt rifle. alaskan Ti and finnlight are out of my price range. tikka is a piece of plastic. a model 70 and the weatherby are nice but They dont come in 280 or 280ai. I'm going with the 280ai, 280, or 7mm so I can carry some 180s with me incase I run into a griz. I was surprised to see a 280ai in the equipement exchange. if only it was stainless. do they pop up very often?

Then buy the Kimber 84L in 280AI and be done with it. Shooters Choice in Arrowwood Alberta has one in stock and ready to be shipped. Check out shooterschoice.ca if you want more detals

Ok, now I did not say they ' are ' equivalent, I did say they were close and in my findings closer than 300-400 fps.
My 280 AI was an '80s 700 BDL, the 7mm Mags. were an early '70s BDL and a mid- '70s M65 Tikka.
With a 150 Nosler Pt. and a max load of RL 22 the 280 AI would just break 3000 fps, the 7RM BDL would be slightly over 3100 with an overmax load of the same powder.
The 7Mag Tikka was slightly slower because it had a shorter barrel.
My accuracy / hunting loads for both were 2990 for the Ackley and either 3050 or 3140 for the 7 Mags.

Wowsers, as someone with no experience with 7mm anything, I was expecting more speed from both the 280AI and 7mm.

I inherited a factory Brno in .270 win, along with handloads, and it does an honest 3000 fps on the button, with 150's over the chrony. An old, "un-lawyerized" load from the mid 70's I think. Guess I won't be ponying up for a 7mm anytime soon...

That is a very hot load. The very best I could do with 140s was ~3050fps w/RL22. The 7mm RM should be able to close in on 3200fps with 150s. Part of the .270's "advantage" over the .280 and .30-06 is that the .270 is loaded to a much higher pressure. I really like the 7mm RM, and I feel the same way about the .270 Win - which is one of the best non-magnums, imo.

That is faster than I want to push a 150 in my old Mod. 70 in 270, actually faster than I need to push them.
I'll check my 270 load data because I think my 150 gr. loads are around 2700 +...
