Finally - I got a response from the govt as to why AR15s are restricted!

Got an answer from Minister Toews as to why the AR 15 is restricted....

It says in part:

"With regards to your comments on the classification of the AR15 rifle, firearms are classified on the basis of their origin, on their operating characteristics and capabilities, and their potential risk to public safety. The AR15 is listed in the Criminal Code Regulations as a restricted firearm because it is very similar to a widely used military weapon, the M-16".

Oi ve!

I would love for the AR15 to become non-restricted, but I don't think it will happen.

I am a bureaucrat (don't hate - I'm not federal and I work with highways) who has to deal with political nonsense every day. I can't see any party standing behind this position because it will cost far more votes and support than it will generate.

No party will support this idea, because the political visibility of changing the classification of this rifle is just too juicy for the opposition to not use against them, and the stance would ultimately cost them votes and support. Show a photo of an AR15 to an average joe turkey and you can be sure their immediate reaction will be that it is bad and evil. That is all it takes and all that matters - you think the average joe turkey is going to educate him/herself about how the looks of a rifle doesn't make it any more or less dangerous as their grandfathers old hunting rifle? Their initial reaction is what counts in the world of politics.

Unfortunately, I think your ultimate solution here is time. Eventually the ar-15 will become dated, and new better rifles will take its place. When that happens, it will be hard for the politicians and policy writers to keep up. Hopefully these new rifles will become more established and therefore more difficult to restrict without the risk of backlash and lawsuits.

It is all about optics - I think the Tavor is a good example - I think it looks like a futuristic death machine and perhaps more evil than the AR15. If there was more of them around, and the public knew you could drive around with one in your car, you can be sure there would be a lot more pressure to restrict it or ban it. But since there is no visibility on the Tavor, and therefore no votes to be made, nobody seems to care.

Keep in mind the responses to the majority of the letters you write are being drafted by some low-level bureaucrat. Basically what [the bureaucrat] does is write a simple fluff letter with no content and no commitment (for the politician's signature). 99% of the time the bureaucrat doesn't even know the opinion of the politician they are writing the letter for. We call them PFO's - which stands for "Please F*** off."

Sorry I usually just lurk - but felt like writing something tonight. I want things changed just as much as anyone, but being in the system and knowing its limits, I can't see it happening. I wanted an AR15 but I settled for a SU16 with pistol grip and LAR mags.

This was the obvious answer from the start.

That's like saying your brother looks a lot like A.Hitler so were gonna arrest him and charge him with war crimes he never actually committed.

Shows you how stupid the government is.

At the risk of bringing unwanted attention to my newest acquisition in a negative way I will post this pic to show how stupid the government really is.

My NON-RESTRICTED Kel Tec RFB .308 semi auto evil deer killing death machine next to my cute RESTRICTED S&W M&P15 17" barrell .223. Do I need to point out the obvious to anyone?

I can't disagree. It's unfortunate that it really seems to be about optics, the perception that the government has done something about 'bad' firearms.

That being said, if we don't ask, we definitely won't get. So, still glad I made the effort to write the Minister and my MP.

One other thing of interest, Minister Toews also indidated that my correspondence would be forwarded to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, since the classification of firearms is established in the Criminal Code which falls under the Minister of Justice.

So, this suggests that Minister Nicholson is a more appropriate person to contact on this issue.

Until the next cabinet shuffle. Sometimes I have to wonder if this is the only reason the cabinet gets shuffled, to prevent any actual work from happening!

or to disassociate themselves from 'oopsies' in their previous portfolios...

And since "you" look like your brother, we'll jail you too for good measure.
Your kids' surname is the same as yours and their uncle's, they're going to jail too.
Tell your wife to keep her maiden surname.

Yes and didn't you know? Evil is a genetic based disorder so were gonna round up every individual linked to your bloodline and toss them in jail too.

Government and the word intelligence are definitely two words that should never be used together. Really they are just a bunch of know it all smart @ss that are making decisions for you and I without any real first hand knowledge.

Maybe it's time for me to start sending off more letters.

The only reason we have "black/green" non-restricted rifles and a huge amount of non-prohib pistols today is that when the firearms act was created our current guns were not around.

There is no doubt that the dough-heads that created the Act attempted to have everything caught in their dragnet for the future, which just wasn't possible.

Just look at the restricted barrel length..... anything under 4.19", at the time most pistols were 4" and American semi-auto rifles were 16". There's no way the dough-heads could have anticipated that the big American gun manufactures would alter their production to suit our gun laws.

If the Firearms Act is the biggest waste of time and money ever created in Canada, well...maybe the CBC is, but at least, like Trans-AMs and greasy mullets, it's stuck in the 80's.

For now........

Translation: It looks scary

Folks keep inferring how stupid our government is. Fact is the true stupidity is the voting population that feeds off media hype and eat sensational news to obesity. The gov't is simply catering to stupidity. Public is too lazy to educate themselves, media happy to sell news, politicians scrounging for votes.

Ban assault rifles is the favor of the month; fact is no one can even define assault rifle beyond black & scary.

RFB, Tavor, XCR ...

I wish there could be a conglomerate state where its still canada but with the US constitution.

that response was in 100 more words than necessary "scary looking"
