Hey everyone need some help deciding

Should I re blue my R/C K98. Or would it be a sin or something, I just love how they look with that nice dark blue on them.

Also I'm thinking of refinishing the stock as well.

And if anyone has done this before please post some pick I would like to see how they turned out.

Thanks

I don't really think a shellacked stock, electropenciled numbers, crappy bluing, and black paint are sought after traits for 98K collectors.

As long as you know what you are doing, refinishing the gun properly would make it superior to any unaltered RCs.

From my buyer perspective, I would not place a premium on a re-finished rifle, collector status or not. To me, such a rifle would have a lower value than an example that is beat up but retains the original finish.

Please don't reblue, refinish, or otherwise alter your RC K98k. These are a piece of history and the Russian refurbishment is part of that history. Any modifications you do will decrease the value in my opinion. They are collectible as seen by the steady increase in value over the years. Right now supply seems to have outpaced demand but when this current import is all sold out the value will probably start going up again imho.

I belive that to be correct as well. I am not going to reblue my K98. Thanks everyone

I used some 0000 steel wool to remove the hardened grease that was on my Kar98k. It preserved the original finish and removed the junk that detracted from the appearance.

I find the bluing is all over the place on my RC and is fine with me because no two parts match anyway. I even have a Gew 98 bayonet band with the parade hook. How's that for parts bin. Stock is sanded with a blued buttcap which never happened in Germany, but hey it is what it is.
I did steel wool some of that black paint off because after a little cleaning it mostly all rubbed off anyhow. It's a shooter and has it's place in history more than a bubba'd' sporterized job. I got one of those repro sling, sight hood and cleaning rods that they sell cheap on eBay and it's a RC complete now. ;)
