I had posted something on the hunting shotgun forum but thought I'd get the opinion of those dedicated to the clay sports. Any thought or opinions? Right now I'm leaning towards the white onyx with the cleaner look and contrast between the wood and metal. If I intend to use it mainly for trap should I be concerned that the rib is fairly low? I'm a new comer to the clay sports and o/u shotguns.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be too concerned with the flat rib, a higher rib will give you the advantage of having your head a little more level and it's a little easier to see whats going, when you pair the high rib, with a higher POI (Point of Impact) it offers an advantage when
shooting trap, you will be able to see the target about the bead of your gun rather than have to cover it, it will be easier to be more precise with lead.

My main concern with those two guns though, pretty and will be very reliable no doubt, they are a lighter weight gun, with field gun dimensions. You will get a lot more felt recoil and perhaps develop some bad habits. Or it may not bother you at all.

But my experience tells me, you will likely be happier with a heavier gun.

Thanks for the advice. Is there something you'd recommend new in the 2k price range more suitable for clay sports and less field gunnish?

If you could find a used 682 beretta in a trap or sporting model, would likely suit you.

As for new?? There maybe some browning citori's close to 2K that would fit the bill.

Biggest thing to find out though is which brand and models fit you, best to try as many guns as you can before pulling the trigger.

If Berettas fit you very well, Brownings likely won't. If Browning fits you very well, Beretta's almost certainly won't.

Go with what feels best, you'll hit more targets!

Thanks I just had the chance to shoulder a 686 white onyx and a browning citori lightning. I didn't like the fit of the browning but in the end didn't like the look of the white onyx, a little to plain for me. I think I need to try a sp I in a 30 inch barrel. :)

Sounds like your looking at field guns, Clay targets in numbers will beat you up with a field gun. They are lighter and have less recoil management compared to a target gun . just my .02 , Good luck finding a gun

Thanks for the tips, you guys are right with my limited budget most of what I am looking at fall within the field category. The more specialized trap versions are out of my budget for a beretta or browning.

Look at the used market. There are quite a few browning and some Beretta that will be available below the 2K price range.

Good luck with your search

Is the 686 white onyx sport labelled as such under the receiver? Or does it just say 686 onyx? I think the one I handled had a manual safety and no mid bead now I'm not sure if it was a field or sporting version.

Have a 686 Onyx Pro, no manual safety, no mid bead, 28" and came with factory extended chokes.

Was looking at the beretta website. Why is the white onyx sporting more than the silver pigeon 1 sporting?

because people will buy it anyway.
But for a trap gun, you are looking at the wrong type of guns. I tried the same thing for skeet, bought a Citori Lightning(field model) and then tried a real skeet gun(Citori XS skeet), The difference is insane.
The Onyx and the Silver Pigeon are field guns with a schnabel fore-end slapped on it and longer barrels.
If you get a chance, Try the Prevail, you can usually get them at a good price and they are a real clay gun.

I have the silver pigeon 1 sporting model with 32 inch barrels. This fits me very well, heavy enough to swing nicely and suck up the recoil of trap loads without issue. It's no problem to put 150 rounds thru it in an afternoon without fatigue. Out of the box with IC over M this shotgun shoots very well. One of the more seasoned and competitive shooters at my club put a box thru it and managed to smoke everything he pointed it at. Very happy with this shotgun and would highly recommend it to anyone it fits.

Did you have a chance to compare it to the 30 inch barrel? Glad to know your sp1 is working out. My primary gain will be trap as well.
