I just came across this item. It is from an American Firearms Forum, for sale at $450.

You are a bit quick for an old Geezer like me. I was getting the photos out of Photobucket, but I have to post them one at a time, so there is a bit of a time delay between the message text and posting all the pictures.

lot of older guns had the serial# on the barrel or bottom of the action. as the rifle is sportier the barrel may have been replaced and serial #1 added. the top of the one should be on a 45% angle not 90% I'm thinking.

And I was looking for a lower number then that.

Not "1", but "1a" on a M98/40, and not a bubba. The numbering system for the M98/40 is believed to be: 1-9999, 1a-9999a, 1b-9999b, etc.

Seems to be alot of steps down in barrel profile for a shotgun.
410 or 28 gauge maybe??
