for an SKSD (I assume the D means detachable mag?), is that a model that was manufactured, or can you convert any SKS to become a D model?

I ask, cause I'm thinking of buying two of those SKS for $75 deals from Marstar, and converting one to take a detachable mag, if it's possible? I simply don't know...hence the 'stupid' comment in my subject.

SKS-D's were manufactured new with milled receivers by Norinco in the 80's, -M's were often converted from older stock.

A regular Chinese SKS can accept detachable duckbill mags once the stock magazine is removed. Promag and Tapco make several models of magazine, and I believe there are steel magazines and drums although I'm not sure who manufactures those.

As far as I know, it's not worth attempting to convert to -D. Some people have made adapter kits which require machining the magwell (iirc), but in the end it's not worth it. SKS-D's are not worth the price in my opinion. They lack the bolt hold open, AK mags are expensive and aren't as easy to come by, they are also much more costly (~$400-500, you could get 2 or 3 normal SKS's for that price). Collectors pieces, if anything.

I have a regular Chinese SKS and I have two duck billed tapco mags that work great, a five and a ten. Great fit ,always works and it retains the open on last round !

I had an sks D and didn't find ak mags pricey at all. I. Ordered some from the states and got 6 tapcos and a 4 pack of Bulgarian mags with pouch for ~ 300 dollars. They were all 5/30
 
you can make any sks take ak mags if your decently handy and have a lot of time on your hands (instructions are in the stickey at the top of read rifles along with other helpfull red rifle mods), however duckbill mags drop right in or requre just a little fitting, you can modify the duckbill mags to remove the duck bill so they will fit in mag pockets if you want, (http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=zi82hVk-fXc&playnext=1&list=PL5ED18FA9F59A8833&feature=results_video (just remove the spaces))
