I'm discussing a build with a smith. He has a 15 twist barrel available. Will I run into stability issues running the 66/68 grain class bullets?

the current flavor for 68 grain bullets in a 6ppc is one in 13.5 yes 13 1/2 twist, check on lilja or any barrel makers website for twist rates, I would not go for a 1 in 15 but is it a 6br that may make a difference, and yes I shoot real benchrest who makes the 68 grainers you will be shooting, berger or sierra jeff

It is a 6br. I'll shoot mostly paper. Not sure which bullets I'll go with yet. It will be mostly a plinker so it will be bergers or sierras, which ever is cheaper and more available. Not getting into any serious competition, just informal BR and short range hunting (spare me the bullet choice talk, i shoot enough caribou to know what will kill).

I am unsure on that twist rate. give Berger a shout and ask. the "hot" bullet right now is the berger column and I have some to offer.

What twist works best????

anyways, enjoy your build. Just keep an eye on the throat length. You want the shorter version.

Personally I just can not see a 15 twist for a 6mm. I would go no more than 14 twist. In our climate I personally would choose a 13 for bullets on a .824 jacket and 13.5 for those on a .790. The 13.5 works but some have there own thoughts on this subject.

You will not know if it will work for the bullets you want to use until you try it... it is right at the end of not working for a 70 grain bullet. 13.5 would be a better choice in my mind. Make sure the throat is cut short so you can always shoot shorter, lighter bullets if it does not work out.

Originally the plan was to build just a .222. The rem 700 I acquired is chambered in .223. It would save a bunch of work and time not having to find a bolt. Any of you guys know where I can find a 14 or 13 twist barrel in either .224 or .243 in Canada? I am not opposed to a take off barrel so long as it'll finish at 20ish inches. Not picky about contour either....

You also have to remember that cold/dense air may require a slightly faster spin to stabilize the bullet. So if you decide to go with the 15 twist, and it works but is marginal in warm weather, when you go hunting in the fall, you may find the bullets hit sideways.

I would not invest in a 1:15 install. It limits bullet selection to the extreme end of the spectrum. Flat based light bullets would work, but the interesting bullets would not.

In my 6BR I like the 100 gr type bullets because I can shoot them long range.

Have a 6.5x47 lapua that shoots 130 grain bergers very well. I'm looking for something that'll shoot either 52/53 grain .224 bullets or something that'll shoot the 66/68 grainer 6mm bullets. Just moved to Iqaluit recently and want to shoot some short range br. Trying to keep the costs down (wife), so I will be ordering a boyds varmint thumbhole stock and will be milling out the forend similar to the 300wsm that was on accurateshooter last week and I'll also modify the buttstock so that it is similar to the star shooter stock.

I'd still be looking for a 13-13.5 6mm. I have a 13.5 6 br. It will stabilize a 70gr SMK @3400 fps but that's it. I've tried to use heavier but they keyhole. So I'd be concerned that 15 might not handle a 66-68 gr bullet. I'd hold out. Get the Boyd's varmit thumbhole, I've shot them. Comfortable and affordable. Good luck.

My thoughts, since you mentioned you have moved up to Iqualuit, I would lean towards a 13 twist as my first choice. No less than a 13.5 as a second.

The 15 twist I cannot see it being for much better than 55gr bullets.

Decided on going the .222 route. The plan is to run 50-53 bullets out of a 12 twist shilen. I'll be sticking to winchester brass very lightly turned for consistency. Any tips on what to feed the rifle? I'll have to bulk order everything (life in the north) so I'm hoping you guys will have suggestions as to what will work.

Man, there's lots of great powder choices for the little triple duece. I use presently WW-748, and have used IMR 4198. Some people swear by IMR 3031, but those powder sticks are a bitty too easy to jam up in that little 22 calibre hole IMO. For varminting it's hard to go wrong with Hornday SPSX in 50 or 55 weight work great in 1:14 twist. If you going to use this rifle on barren ground caribou, maybe someone from BC could inject thier small bore experiences here?
I have nothing to offer in regards to this.
