Shopping optics

ACOG's are rugged scopes - thought they have terrible parallax issues. While in the 2000-2005 frame they where great - they got supplanted by Combat Variables - specifically the S&B Short Dot. Now the Combat Variables are growing from 1-4 to 1-6 and 1-8.

As Kevin said: Things evolve...

People seem to believe that fixed low power with no external adjustments and a bullet drop compensated reticle is somehow more "tactical". Believing that is like believing that being in the special class really means that you're special. The mentality behind giving troops this kind of setup was the same mentality as giving them a three round burst selector. These are things you give to people you don't feel are competent enough to deal with equipment that isn't absolutely fool proof. It stems from the non-volunteer draftees they pulled from the ghettos in Vietnam being poorly trained and poorly motivated. This is not the case with the all volunteer forces you have today. Troops are fully capable of managing a scope with variable magnification and turrets. The fact that CF are running the C79s in a hacked manner is evidence of that. Its clever and resourceful on the part of the CF, but its a hack. The optic was not designed with the intent of the user running around with a washer tether to his sleeve so that he can dial it in at his leisure.

That mentality has changed. It was the US Military that went to Leupold and asked them to develop the 1-8x CQBSS. These 1-8x scopes are envisioned as the next combat optic for regular soldiers, not as DMR optics as many seem to mistakenly believe. That comes from the Leupold people at Shot Show, its also mentioned right in literature for the scope: "Every soldier will have the tools to make precision long-range shots while still having the quick-acquisition sights crucial in today's rapidly evolving combat zone."

I think I'll hold out until the 1-10X becomes available or maybe the 1-12X with FLIR. Don't want to be combat ineffective at the rifle range.

NF discontinued the scope and keep a few on hand for Crane mandated spares.

A lot of optics companies bet the farm and lost millions on the 1-8x program. Leupold won with their radical departure from the old Leupold SOP of rebranding a hunting scope. When they created and funded the Tactical Division it was a huge change in their company profile.
Now the 1-8x is way to expensive and heavy for Big Army on a 556 gun.
Anyone who saw the Leupold shadow box at SHOT saw the CQBSS sitting on a 762 gun ;)
Big Army is not looking for a HORUS reticle for the average soldier -- they want a BDC reticle with wind, and the CMR-W reticle is what came out, and the Mk6 1-6x has been fielded to two BCT's in Afghan to give them the ability to get PID and sucesfully engage further than either the RFI 4x ACOG's or the standard Army M68 CCO (many flavors of Aimpoint).

Nightforce rep at the show said they're still in production to finish out the contract.

Leupold rep told me that it was the Mark 8 on trials with the military, that the Mark 6 was being targeted to LE. But I see they've sent a bunch of Mark 6 to SEP for evaluation. Both scopes were also mounted to blue plastic M4 dummy guns at Shot.

They've had it on 5.56 guns at previous Shots:

In any case, I think we agree that the turretless fixed powers are yesterdays flavor...

Fixed 2.5-4 power optics are going to be very common world wide for a long time because they do the job required of them (increasing hit probability with a minimum of training and cost).

Where do we get a mark 6 around here...without losing a kidney.?

In reality, I stand at a bench...shoot 25M or maybe 50M....sometimes I go crazy and shoot 100M.
A 4x spectre OS or 3x ACOG will do just fine for me

No one ever makes it easy.

Too many choices...............

You sure say! Right now i'm more confused than i ever was, read thru all this thread and proposed links, i just can't make my mind. One thing is sure, getting more research done on service rifle, i decided to let that idea slip aside for the moment. Competition wise, ipsc is giving me a good/hard/challenging run for my money, and will keep competion stuff to pistols. So now that i am open to any kind of sights, the choice is overwhelming. I will make myself a list of all scopes mentionned in this thread tomorow, a good starting point to get some research done.

So now that no service rifle for this year at least, i am looking for a way to shoot my 20'' NM, with 69gr sierra match bullets, most accuratly at 200yds exactly, as my club does not offer any longer range.
