I purchased a Colt Lightweight Sporter in 9mm off the EE a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with it, but wanted to go to a retro carbine look. This is what I started off with. (stock photo, not my gun)

This is the look I was after, specifically a Colt 634. Again a stock photo, not mine unfortunately.

And this is what I ended up with after swapping the original 16 inch barrel out for a Rock River Arms 10.5 inch unit and changing the factory stock out for a collapsable unit. This is not a stock photo, this is mine! I am VERY pleased with the end result. I would give my eyeteeth to get my hands on a real Colt 634, but this will have to do for now! The original Colt parts have been preserved, so it can go back to original configuration if I wish at a later date. I do however have a couple of questions regarding the 634 that those in the know may be able to help me with.
1 - is the butt stock on a 634 composite or aluminum, and how many position is the receiver extension?
2 - is the gas block diameter on a 634 barrel .625 or .750? I am guessing the former?
3 - is the barrel length on a 634 10 inch or 10.5 inch? I am thinking 10?

I have a factory Colt 10" flat top on mine with a KAC Ras. It's the closest thing I can get to a 634 for now. I have been looking for a 634 since 2000.

That's one nice carbine you got there. To answer some of your questions: Judging by the photos, the stock of these look plastic and not aluminium. The gas block looks to be a regular .750" gas block and the barrel seems to be a 10" barrel.

They would be fiber then? I was really wishing I had another nice aluminum one to put on it, but the more I look at pics of them the more I am convinced that they were originally synthetic of some kind.

I am quite convinced that they are supposed to be a 10 inch barrel, which means that mine is a half inch too long for a nit pick like me, but not a huge deal. I did think from looking at pics that the front sight block diameter was .625" but I don't know that for sure.

The 5/20 Colt mag that is pictured in it came with the gun. I did score a couple Colt 5/32's of the EE a few weeks ago though for $100 bucks apiece! I had the EMT to the seller before he had finished posting all his pics! Once in a while you get lucky.

According to photographs in Collector Grade Publications BLACK RIFLE II by C. Bartocci the original early civilian models R6450 had the two position aluminum acetate coated stocks proceeded shortly after by the fiberite N1 marked stocks and later by the 4 position waffle style and optional flat top upper improvements. Assume this may have happened concurrent with the R0634. g2.

Colt 9mm's are .625" at the FSB. Barrels are definitely shorter than 10.5". Colt 5.56 barrels are 10.3", the 9mm's may be the same or shorter.

Thanks! I was pretty sure they were .625 at the FSB but had no verification. I am pretty certain the barrels are a true 10 inches long, a fellow has PM'ed me that owns a 634, he is going to check for me.

Very helpful! Thanks!
