Best 1911 for under a grand

I gotta say, I've only put about 200 rounds through my Remington R1, but I would recommend to anyone. It is sturdy and for me, with Federal ammo, 100% reliable. Mine set me back $680

Series 80 guns? Who cares? What is the big deal? I have been shooting Series 80 .45's since they came out and have NEVER experienced any of the reported "issues" - which on a shooting range will probably never show up.

the only issue that i care about caused by a gun being series 80 is the trigger pull is never as good as a series 70 one. but I put a very high value on my trigger pulls, others may not
 
You can't beat the Ruger/ammo deal on right now imo. I recently got one of the Remington R1 Enhanced .45 and I am quite impressed.It compares very closely to my STI Trojan...Not bad for $850.00....
 
I think that the trigger pull thing may be a valid point - if you would want to call it that. I have shot many of both, and I have seen a number of 80's with better triggers than some of the 70's I have tried. The bottom line is that it is a 1911 and most of the triggers in these guns get tuned at some point to the point where they are amazing. My R1's trigger was embarrasingly good right out of the box I won't touch it. It is as crisp and clean as my Colt's.

the series has 80 a firing pin block in it, which means a bunch of extra parts in the trigger mech that really arent needed. They dont really do much except make your trigger worse and frustrate your gunsmith and cause him to reccomend removing it when he does a trigger job on it and annoy you when you tear the gun down to the frame for cleaning. No real point in buying a series 80 gun with so many series 70 guns available for the same price. I personally dont buy series 80 guns period, which kills be because I really like my sig 229 and would like a matching 1911 from them.
 
Sigs are tighter fit guns than STI. Cheaper, comes with 2 8 round mags too over STI's one mag. STIs are 70's. My R1E is 80, but with a bit of tuning the trigger pull can be made even better. I'm a newb 1911 owner but fully stripping an 80 is easy - lots of youtube vids for help. FYI - Norcs or 70's. If your gunsmith complains about doing 80's....

If you really want a challenge, try a Colt National Match trigger job in 70 or 80.... eek!
 
I've got a pair of R1s, both nicely fitted guns. If you like the look of guns with just the basic mods (lowered/dimpled ejection port, bevelled mag well, long tang, good sights), it's hard to beat. Personally, I don't need or want more, and don't find the total GI versions to my liking.

As for the Series '80 trigger issue, it is easily overcome with a ready made part from Brownells or one made from a bit of steel with a file. Lots of videos on the net on 'how to'.

the mags are also tripp research mags with ruger markings (patent number on them matches my ones from tripp) I thought that was a great thing to include 2 top of the line mags vs 2 whatever mags like most makers
