A '22 conversion' gadget for hunting rifles?

Hello all,

I recall some CGN'ers talking about a little gadget a few months back that essentially allowed you to fire a .22LR bullet from a centerfire rifle. It was basically a piece of metal that you loaded with a 22 bullet and then placed in the chamber of the rifle, and the exterior of it was shaped to fit the chamber dimensions of your specific centerfire caliber. Does anyone remember the name of this little device? I've completely forgotten the name.

I'm considering giving it a try because I would love to be able to tag the odd grouse or rabbit when I'm stillhunting should I come across one. The person who mentioned it in the last thread used his just in case he needed to finish off a deer with a close range shot to the head, because he didn't like the performance of his centerfire at such close range for the purpose. I've also considered a combination gun, but the noticeable increase in weight for the combo gun is making me reconsider.

Any help identifying this little gadget would be much appreciated, as well as ideas of what you other fellows do for the purpose I mentioned, namely getting small game and big game at the same time but with one rifle.

This device is called a calibre conversion insert but I don't know where they are sold in Canada.

Thanks for that Bellero, with that information I was able to get a lucky hit on google to find what I was looking for. The device I was talking about is made in Canada and it's called the "Hammond Game Getter". It doesn't exactly fire stock .22 ammunition, but it's close.

Another company in Alaska called MCA Sports makes chamber adapters that fire .22 ammunition as well, I just learned about them while searching for the above product. It's an interesting idea anyways... maybe just a novelty, I'll have to look into it more.

Has anyone used either of these products?

there have been several brands of sub caliber insterts, but companies making them are hit and miss and dont seem to produce them long, i was never able to get ahold of MCA in alaska. they can fire other rounds besides .22 too. some subcalibers can be very accurate. I use a .32acp/308 adapter for grouse, ive also got a .25acp/6.5mm carcano one.

i bought bought one at a gun show, the other on this site. If you cant find one, google 'hammond game getter' and those are just as good. they use a modified case, a 22 blank, and a swagged lead pellet.
 
Also called chamber adapters...

I saw some 12G-410g for shotguns at the lat show. I have spoken with Ace at MCA about an adapter for 30-06 to 7.62x39...he has a Canadian distributor (Bruno? bullseye reloading?...couple years ago now). A neat concept, I think developed by the yanks to convert 30-06 Garands to 7.62x51...turns out, in a semi, they were problematic...the adapter would eject with a spent case and, the next one live one was no fun.

I remember seeing those tubes at some point.

However for the price, trouble and non-reliability of those, they were quickly phased out.

Especially with the price of .22LR rifles these days.
 
I use a Hammond Game Getter in my .308. It's a handy unit for putting a hole in the odd grouse when out hunting bigger critters.

I also am a friend of Brian Hammond, I've known him for about 10 years, though I mainly see him at Gun Shows these days.

The G-G is a handy tool and accurate enough. A bit fiddly to reload in a hurry, but it is always in my ammo pouch, and a few spare power loads and shaped bullets live in my kit without taking up a bunch of room.

I'd much rather be able to carry a rimfire sidearm, but 'till then, this'll do.

I have a Hammond gamegetter for my 308.

Very well made device, I' ve used it without shaping the lead ball ( buckshot ) in the die. It leave a ring of lead in the chamber so keep an eye on that before loading a regular load in it.

Also, do not try to get the maximun velocity with the blank, try going slow like when reloading.

I' ve found the best accuracy was with low to medium blank.

Check the drop at specific range and enjoy...

Doesn't the 7.62x39 use a .311 bullet? If so how do they think you could fire that out of a 30-06 that has a .308 bullet.....
 
There is likely a significant loss in accuracy when you align a barrel inside a barrel. You'd be better off making up some lightly charged small game loads for your centre fire rifle.

Ruger uses the same .308 barrels for their x39 guns, as they do for their other .30 cal's, so I have read.

<shrug> Seems to keep them happy.

As far as shooting x39 on an adapter for an '06 chamber, I dunno how that would work, as the case sizes mismatch a bit too much to make an insert work. The insert for shooting x51 (.308 Win) in a '06 chamber was a filler for the front end of the chamber. The rest of the case dimensions match up well enough to work.
I can recall seeing them in a magazine article, years ago. They looked like the stop-gap answer that they were.

Its just a modified spent case. Pretty dam accurate to about 50 yrd
