so after a number of months watching the rimfire exchange , the item I had been waiting for finally became available. a forum member was selling a really sweet whiteface mountain - predecessor of green mountain - sporter - contour barrel that measured 22". it was perfect. so I offered the seller his asking price. to me the problem with many AM barrels is that you are basically forced to mount a scope unless you want to shoot a gun with only rear sights...which I guess would be feasible. but I hate scopes. I like my guns nice and clean and clutter free. I had posted a few weeks ago about the possibility of having a dovetail groove machined to accept either the front sight from the factory barrel or something along the lines of tech sights, which are what I purchased with a mind to mounting them on my gun. just got it back from the 'smith today at Calgary Shooting Centre(thanks gents!)and had a chance to shoot it before I took it home with me. with the open sights and shooting the gun from the bench, I could have almost spelled my name in bullet holes. it feels like I have pin-point accuracy. no failures whatsoever for the first 150 rounds of Super X .22lr

I personally find the AM stocks that are supposed to be "tactical" gaudy and just about the tackiest thing you could ever foist upon a 10/22 so heres my contribution to the 10/22 panoply.

I am looking forward to the early spring so I can get it out and stretch the proverbial legs of my new barrel. thanks to Matt(I think)at the Calgary Shooting Centre and forum member Zuke.
 
I'm not sure how the cost and the type of work done relate, but for everything I paid a hundred bucks on the dot. then I got to shoot it before I took it home. I am kinda sad that I do not get to shoot stingers through this gun anymore cuz it was a real blast when I could. but the increase in accuracy is a fair trade off...

Thanks . A hundred isnt much to pay for accuracy .

Do you have a side pic of the front side mount? I might use the idea on my other barrel.
 
Very nice! I just picked up a 10/22 and have a set of tech sights on the way. I'm looking to have a set-up very similar to what you have there. Any range report yet?
 
so here is my quasi range report. went to the indoor range for a few hours today for a couple reasons. firstly I just had an itchy trigger finger. I just wanted to shoot. second, I was interested in trying a variety of different flavours of ammo through my new barrel setup in the spirit of finding a flavour that I can run with for the forseeable future.

three of the four types I was using today. the fourth is the remington thunderbolts. the "wildcat" stuff was absolute garbage. bought four boxes of 50 and only got through one before I switched back to the federal. in a box of 50, probably a third of the box had some type of failure. not only that, but it almost seemed as though the case dimensions were weird cause they would not chamber on their own. upon letting the bolt forward to strip a fresh sound, it would stop its forward motion just as the round entered the chamber. numerous misfires. weak powder charge in some cases was not even cycling the bolt back fully. mucho dissapoint. I was most impressed by the thunderbolt stuff. those little guys had a real snap to them! they cycled the bolt with authority, I gotta buy some more of'em.

I was shooting - like I said earlier - indoors at the maximum range of 25 meters.

this is the bottom right quadrant. all the quadrants and the middle of the target look very much like this. this was done with the factory 10 round magazine and I was really ripping them through the gun, but found it very easy to keep the sights on target.

I know that shooting to only 25m does not mean the gun is going to be as or more accurate at longer ranges, but I hope these results are a good indicator of what is possible. also, I wonder how much of a difference using match ammo would make.

I did have one malfunction that I had never had before with any gun, and I'm not quite sure was to call it other than an accidental discharge. heres what happened with some pictures to help illustrate. I had the bolt locked back, magazine on the bench. there were two single live rounds on the bench that had not fired on the first trigger pull. so whatever, I decided to load them one at a time. they were both federal. dropped the first one in the chamber, let the bolt forward and then fired. no problem. dropped the second one in the chamber, repeat. only this time, when I let the bolt forward, the rim somehow got pinched and the primer ignited. there was no hammer strike. the bolt was partially out of battery when the primer ignited. the case also got pretty mangled upon ejection.

this would not be called a slamfire right? the bullet from the case struck the wall about three quarters of the way downrange. upon leaving, I stopped at the desk to get my PAL back and showed this case to a staff member and explained what happened. he was not sure what to call this either. strange I guess. a learning experience, yes.
