received my svt40 and after a thorough cleaning went to the range. after approx 50 rounds the gun jammed after firing. appears the round backed out of the chamber about 5mm and stopped. I attempted to pry the round loose with a screw driver but it was not moving. I was able to tap the round out with the cleaning rod. my question is why would this happen? is it just from the surplus ammo fouling the gun or should I be looking for another problem. I have not fired it since this, only cleaned it.

dirty chamber. Ive seen this happen to a friends rifle. i cleaned the chamber with an ar chamber brush and no jams afterwards

Sometimes some paint gets in the chamber during refurb, too. Coupled that with the lacquer coating on the ammo and it is a recipe for jams. My cousins rifle was doing this, but has since sorted itself out.

I've had to do the "Pogo Trick" a couple times while at the range and each time I think I was using MFS ammo - out of all my SVT's, I typically only take out the best now and it doesn't have any of these issues, but been there, done that...

On what gas setting your rifle was set?
SVT has fluted chamber so the gas helps bolt in extracting spent casings. If your settind is too low it may be there is not enough pressure to push casing out from the chamber? Usually cleaning helps, but after 50 rds there may have not enough lube left on the walls of chamber or bolt?

Ok sounds like it was just dirty and nothing more to be concerned with. I think the gas is set at 1.2. What will happen if the gas is set too high? As it was the spent cases were piling up nicely a few feet away which I thought was ok.

Too high setting will result in harsh ejection, the case will be messed up. Generally, 150gr ammo work fine at 1.3-1.5 and heavier bullet 180-200gr at 1.2 and possibly1.1 setting can vary from 1 rifle to the other. Just be sure to clean your chamber thouroughly and you should be good to go. SVT flutted chamber dont like ammo with lacquered case so they need a bit more cleaning.
