Hey boys, I am shooting one of those Rem tacticals with the short 20" pipe...and I swear that thing barks louder than my other guns. My question is this: are there suppressors that can tone that down a bit? I know that back in the day all the cool kids were magna-porting their rifles and those big magnums would blow the dust out your ears if you stood next to them. Will flash suppressors do the same thing...?
 
any device that quiets a firearm is a prohibited device.

get a longer barrel put on it will burn more of the powder inside the barrel instead of outside the barrel causing more sound. a flash suppressor likely wont have any effect if anything it will make it worse.
 
Too bad sound suppressors are prohibited in Canada. As stated by Aries, a flash hinder or muzzle brake will not reduce muzzle blast.
 
Without changing the barrel, the easiest is to install a Bloop tube. Just a pipe spun onto the muzzle.

The orig intent was to extend the sight radius of open sight rifles but it also reduces muzzle blast to the shooter.

A linear brake might push enpough blast foreward to make a difference. These are sometiimes used on AR shorties.

Silly question but are you shooting it at a range that's enclosed or under a coverd shooting shack?

....and of course you are wearing hearing protection rite?...

The only problem with this is that if the bloop tube is being added to reduce noise and not for the purpose of extending a sight radius then it would fit the definition of a device designed or intended to reduce the sound of a gunshot. That it is an empty tube is irrelevant.

The two potential solutions I would suggest would be a linear brake or the use of a faster burning powder.
 
It could be argued a bloop tube can be used to suppress muzzle flash and is simply a deeply recessed crown for muzzle protection. It would have to be completely 'open' with no constrictions. I do not know of anyone prosecuted for using a deeply recessed crown or a bloop tube...

It doesnt reduce the sound of the shot fired. It reduces the muzzle blast to the shooter. Sort of like having a longer barrel. The shooter will get more blast form a 20" then a 26" barrel.
 
A bloop tube doesn't reduce the noise signature. Only directs it further away from the shooter.

Think a LONG Linear brake without the front.

Same thing but easier to make.

Want to try, grab a short piece of tubing with a 3/4" ID or whatever the barrel is. Mount to the barrel and see the difference. I bet it will be significant.

So.... Barrels longer than 20" are actually sound suppressors? Oh no! That means that my great grandfather's No. 1 Mk 3 is my coolest gun.

Who said that? THe sound made form the shot is not suppressed at all. THe blast is just farther away from the shooter. If you are standing beside a 30-06 going off its loud. Now stand 20 feet behind the shooter it is still loud just not as in your face.

Don't be a wussy?
Try shooting a 338 Lapua with a brake. Now that's muzzle blast. After that your 308 or 223 will feel fine. I have a Savage 308 with 20" barrel and I don't notice it as being overly loud, same with my RFB and the muzzle is even closer. Wear your hearing protection and get used to it.
Other than that a longer barrel is the only thing that will help.
