I would like to start shooting cast out of my 300 H&H. I have a 150 grain GC bullet mold that I use for 30-30 with unique powder. Does anyone have a good load using those components?

I don't have a 300 H&H but I do load cast bullets for 300WM. My first choices would be 20-24gr of Unique as a starting point or a 70% capacity load of Trail Boss. Somewhere around 30-35gr of SR-4759 should also work well.

You might also consider getting a mould that casts a heavier bullet--in the 30-06 and .300 magnums cast bullets in the 180-210 grain range often give better results than lighter bullets--does depend somewhat on how well the bullet fits your bore.

As the above poster said, Trail Boss, impossible to overload the case as long as you do not compress the powder. Easy to work up a good load. That being said here is the data from the Lyman cast bullet handbook for a 151g bullet.

Red Dot 12-15g
700x 12-15g
Green Dot 13-16g
PB 13-16.5g
Unique 15-18g
SR7625 13.5-17g
630 18.0-22.0

Hope this helps.

Yes on the trail boss, but your unique load looks a little hot for the H&H The max listed in the manual for the 300 win is only 22g of unique, The H&H much less. Not saying that you can't work up but 20 grains of unique is too much for a starting point for the H&H

Thanks for the info. I've been looking for the lyman cast manual but can't find one. On the load of 15-18 g unique, is that starting load? And what is the fps on that? You don't use any fillers do you? Do u still use magnum primers? Thanks

This is complletely different than the information in the First Edition of the Lyman handbook of cast bullets.
For the 300 H&H, 150 grain cast gc bullet, they show eight different powders, from fast 4227 to the very slow 4350.
No Unique is shown.
Examples are 35 to 46 grains of 3031 and 41 to 51 grains of 4350.

I have the third edition lists the 151 GC min 15 max 18 unique fps listed at1665 and 1880 respectively fillers not required with trail boss and i do not normally use them with unique either. Manual lists just regular large rifle primers but I have used magnum as well with little or no change in accuracy/point of impact.

Bullet mold used is 311466 Gas Checked 151 grains.

Interesting? Seems strange that the data would change so much, however with safe reloading practices I am sure all published loads would be fine, just have to find what the rifle likes.
