I am mostly a duck hunter but I enjoy getting out for the occasional deer hunt but my go to deer guns, my .30-06 and .32 special just haven't been bringing me any luck. I keep thinking something like a remington model 7, winchester 70 fwt, Browning BLR or similar light weight rifle in 7mm-08 or .270wcf along with a nice fixed 2.5 or 4x scope would make an excellent mild recoiling rifle and also be great to loan to the girlfriend if she ever wants to come deer hunting or gets drawn for a moose tag. Am I wrong?

I have a rem 700 in 7mm mag , i have a rem 700 alaskan Titanium in 300wsm that is pretty well my " go to rifle " ... but i came across a Rem 700 original Titanium last year and its chambered in 708, My GF packed it last year and it hammers bucks dead. Lots of hitting power with a 140gr for dear and very mild recoil. My GF is 110 pounds on a heavy day and she loves the rifle.
Alot of people like the 243 for the GF's and kids. Although a great little cartridge, I think its a little light for deer. The 708 has very comparable recoil with quite a bit more hitting power. I think your definatly on the right track.
I 2nd cleftwynd on the Mod 7 ... or maybe even a little CDL. The Mod 7 will be lighter but you will get a more accurate rifle in the CDL

6mm is not close to .243 it is .243... like a 6.5mm is .264, 7mm is .284 etc... if they were not standardized ammo manufacturers could not keep up... and alot of shooters would be blowing up guns using offsized ammo.... .243 minus .236 is .007, that's kinda a big deal.
It dosnt really matter if 6mm is or is not .243 unless your buying bullets for reloading purposes. My point was they are both small compared to a .708 in bullet weight. they are not the same cartridge . I wouldn't go cramming 6mm in a .243. Well you can do what ever you want
and ... check your math , although 6mm and .243 cratrdges may run the same bullets. Do some real math . 6mm converted to inches = .236

I know a fellow who shot a big B&C moose several years ago. I went to see his shoulder mount of it at his company office. He has a bit of money and I knew he had a heap of different firearms and so I asked him what he shot the moose with.
Rem. model 7 in 7mm08. He said he had bought it for his wife to use but she was not to keen on hunting. He had shot it a lot at the range and really liked the low recoil and accurate shooting. He said it was about the only rifle he took hunting anymore, the big kicking magnums could stay in the gun safe from now on.
Another friend has a Rem. 788 in 6mm that he has shot lot of game with. Then he got one in .308 and shot a few things. Then he got one in 7mm08 and has done some extensive load development for it. It is his current favourite.

Don't get offended... but those are the kind of online misunderstandings that get repeated and confuse people... clarification is a good thing and it may save someone getting hurt down the road... perhaps not in this scenario, but in similar situations... or it can at least keep them from looking silly at the range.
I hear ya , im familiar with the termanology of Metric and Standard measurements in shooting sports. Im personnaly not familiar with the smaller cartridges just because for the game i chase i have no confidence in any thing narrower than .284 so i have no use for them .. thats just me. I knew .243 and 6mm were very close when Clftwynd started talking about 6mm. Although I knew for certain they were different cartridges. So instead of opening a reloading manual i just did a quick conversion from mm to inches and came up with .236. Which i thought was odd ... hence the question mark at the end of my initial .236 post.
I did get offended just because of your " matter of fact " manner that you posted. Felt like i was being spoken down too when it was not

Have to admit ive only shot mine once. My Dad did the reloading for it last year just because i didnt have time and i wantetd to have it set up for the GF. But when i took it out i went and just had fun putting 20 rounds through it at objects out in the bush. It was alot of fun to shoot after pounding away with a 300wsm and a 7 rem mag for the past 10 years. This post has me thinking maybe should go put some more time into my .708 right quick.
As far as the 6mm rem .243 debate this thread started, lots of things are strange when it comes to fire arms, for example why is the .284 diameter referred to as 7mm when the .277 of the .270 is far closer to the actual imperial measurement of 7mm? Just accept somethings and if really in doubt contact a gunsmith or the manufacturer.
As far as my wanting a 7mm-08 I don't think the issue will be solved until I own either it, a 7x57, 6.5x55 or a .270 or .280 or better yet all the above.
