i have an enfield p17 30-06 that i would like to rechamber to .300 win mag(guy at the range had one so now i must copy). How much do you think this should cost? i dont want to ask a gunsmith just yet since i dont plan on doing it for a while and dont want to waste his time, has anyone here ever got that done?

are you sure the barell and the chamber will take the higher pressures.? I know the bolt head might not work either unless it is modified to take the larger diameter of the .300 win

nice idea of a project though.

i just saw one on ee and a fellow at the gun range had one, i asked the guy at the gun range about it but he said he was green and his dad had given it to him

300 WinMag burns a lot more powder than the '06 and for comparatively little actual improvement. What shape is your 1917 in right now? If it still is restorable, then this would be a crime against humanity or something.

That said, the bolt face can be opened up to accept the larger rim; after that it is a straight rechambering job but the feed rails may need to be opened up for the fatter casing. Call it a couple hundred minimum.

300 WinMag is same length as the '06, so, if your throat is at all worn, you gain nothing: a bad throat is still a bad throat.

MORE sense to rechambering a slightly-worn P-'14 and handloading the 300 WinMag case with .312" slugs: bolt is already the right face, so it is a straight rechamber-and-feed-rails job, call it 150 or so. Good part is that it will clean up most bad throats at the same time. Need to replace the Magazine Box at the same time, use 1917 box.

Just my 2 nickels' worth (since we Free Canadians are no longer allowed to use pennies).

Century converted a lot of these. It's a reamer job and an opening of the bolt face on a lathe. $150 tops from a reputable smith.

Rechambering involves nothing more than stuffing a reamer into it, which should be less than a 100$ or there about. That said if it is a 17 that means opening the bolt face, as well as magazine work to get them to feed. By the time you factor it all in I would be surprised if you had much change from 400$.
There are a good number of these rebores floating around that Century used to do as the Centurion. The 300wm versions used to just get a rebore and mag package, as well as bolt face done. That said they also used to do alot on Eddystones, inspite of the widespread concerns about it in the USA due to the lore of extra hard recievers that had been known to crack. Some of the older smiths down south, like Dunlap dont recommend doing it with any P17 anymore, just rebarreling, due to failures over the years.
