Hello everyone,

I am new to these forums and have been tinkering with my SKS today, on my day off. I had the joy of removing the cosmoline and getting to know my sweet rifle just a bit better.

There are two things that bugged me though. The secondary concern is that my bolt seems to have an extreme pressure on its retaining pin, and I cannot get it to come out, even with a punch and hammer. Has anyone got any experience with this? Any tip on what to do?

As well, my magazine seems to fit inside the stock more loosely than before. It still functions just fine, and it seems that the only difference is jiggling (there is no malfunction inside the magazine, I can still load rounds appropriately). Is this usual or is it abnormal?

The way to remove the retaining pin (if you had any questions there) is to put forward pressure on the receiver cover with your thumb, rotate the retaining pin up 90 degrees and pull it out. That should be all it ever takes. It will only come out if it is in this position.If it does not come out easily, try working it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. If that doesn't work, Then some pesuading may be needed.
As for the loose mag, I would have to see it. Sorry.

Are you talking about the retaining pin on the bolt that hold the extractor in place? If so, penetrating oil can help but you still need a punch and a good hammer, resting the bolt on a solid surface. As for mag, that,s not unusual, some fit tight some fit a bit loose.

These images are courtesy of you actually, svt1940. Using the punch as you did in your field stripping 101 did not seem to work. I'm unsure of how to get it out. There is nowhere to rotate the retainer pin as far as I could see.
 
If you are trying to take the firing pin out what I do is drill a hole in a piece of 2x4 about a 3/4 ". lay the bolt on top of the 2x4 with the pin over the drilled part and give it a good hit with a punch.

mentionned, drill a hole on a wood block then lay the bolt flat on so the pin will fall in the hole. Dont be gentle with the hammer,take a good punch and hit him hard! You wont brake the pin or the bolt.

I have tried setting up wood blocks to hold it in place while I punch out the retainer pin (and wasn't afraid to hit it hard), but the pin still wouldn't come out. I'll look for a drill today and try and use the hole method you have both provided. Update later.
 
UPDATE: It's still refusing to come out of the socket, even after hammering it hard. Anyone have any other suggestions on maybe greasing it up to get it out? Or an alternate method?
