I have this old Bolt action 12 ga taking up space, I think it is a mosberg, but haven't looked at it for ages. It got me thinking what can I do with it to make it somewhat usefull. It has one of those screw type poly chokes for the days gone by stuck on the barrel that could be easily removed, and the barrel dressed, if it will not shoot a slug .
Has anyone used one of these old clunkers as a slug gun? mounted a scope on one?
Chances are I will never shoot it anyway, just need a project to ocupy time with.

I blew the select choke out of my gun shooting slugs out of it so I just ended up chopping the barrel just behind the choke.

Made one hell of a fun slug gun then.

Picture is from when I got the gun before I chopped it up.

they are interesting shotguns of the past.

I like how you if you have 2 mags, you can have 2 slugs in one mag and 2 buck in another

the pump action has basically replaced all of the odd designs like the lever and bolt action

They are good for rabbits. Not to often your pumping
More then one shell into a rabbit, unless your population is a lot higher than here.

i have one with the poly choke i used everything possable in it shot, buck, slugs for slugs i just screw the choke to the most open selection

it will run everything no problem just not steel shot

To each is his one, in 1997 I bought a Marlin 55 Goose Gun from CTC for $75 new, as part of the liquidation when they bent over to Bill C-68. I had a local gunsmith shorten the barrel to 25.75" and it was until 2 years my only upland hunting gun and it was used extensively each summer for shooting targets. They will not give a fast double, but they are quicker to cycle than a single shot is to reload. It was rare that I needed a second shot that it couldn't provide.

I got a brand new 3 Mag Marlin Goose 36 inch barrel when my buddy's store quit selling guns. The price was right FREE. I painted it with Camo paint and my dad has shot a half a dozen turkeys with it. I debated cutting it down to 20 Inches and putting screw in choke then putting a aimpoint style scope on it for turkeys. It would cost about 200 to get it that way

The Mossberg bolts had a choke by Mossberg called the C lect choke. It is most definately NOT a Poly Choke. Poly Chokes are built super tough and will not fail with abuse like a c lect choke may. Cutting the gun will eliminate alot of the choke versatility. But I hunted a shortened Mossberg one year and it was a cool gun. The stocks have very rifle like dimensions and shoot great. A good front bead, some practise with slugs and birdshot and you would have a very useful gun for the bush. (when shortened) If left alone set it on MOD and shoot it all you want with whatever you want.
