savage 340 info

It's a cheaper entry level rifle, but perfectly useful. A buddy used to regularly get his share of coastal blacktails with the same rifle.
 
There are two in 30-30 for sale in the EE for $300.

I wouldn't want to pay more than $250 for one.
 
30-30 are by far the more common. They also were chambered in 22 Hornet and 225 Winchester. Not sure if they were chambered in 223 or not. If it's in good shape, closer to great, $325 is a good spot to start.
 
I bought a new .222 Savage 340 in 1966 (for $76). Shot a LOT of groundhogs over the years. It was never MOA for 3 shots. The 1st 2 shots would be touching, the 3rd would open up the group to 1 1/2" to 1 5/8". That didn't worry me as I only cared that the 1st shot killed whatever I was aiming at. It still shoots good today.

My best groups were with 50 gr Speer "TNT" hollow points.
 
You won't regret it. I have 3 in 30/30. Got my first buck with one.

If I found one for under 350 I would look at it. I have paid as little as 200 and as much as 350. It all depends on the shape. And can it accept a scope. The A models can't.

the 222 is one of the most accurate rounds ever, it's one of my all time favorites, not saying the 340 is up to the tac driving task, but you should have some awesome fun with it. Happy Shoot'en.
 
Gopher size critters out to 150 yrds will not be a problem for the 340 in .222 !! I have a couple in 22 Hornet that I use in the gopher patches, and I usually dont shoot over 125 yrds with them !!!
 
They were made in .223 as well.I have the one I lent my Dad and he shot a dozen WT's over the years and 3 black bear.All one shot each with my 55gr handload.
