Cut Shell

I've never tried it but wouldn't hesitate in an emergency situation....till then I would rather use slugs if they are available. There has been a lot of discussion about this before with some people concerned about the extra pressure of squeezing the extra material through chokes etc.....
By the way most people don't recommend cutting the shell in half like you suggest and do an over lapping cut that holds the shell together till it's shot.

My buddy has done them before (not while hunting) as well as wax slugs which I think those guys cover in another video. They yield decent accuracy and would likely work well in a pinch.
 
Use caution, the top portion of the cut shell will sometimes stay in the chamber and you can still ram another shell in there. Always check after firing to make sure the whole piece shot out.
