The area that I work is significantly separated from where I live by a significant geographical barrier. Its literally "the other side of the mountain". The attitudes towards hunting and specifically the attitudes towards poaching on this side is frankly insane. Where I live there is a certain amount of road hunting and poaching but on this side, its EVERYWHERE! Around home, on the first day of deer season you see tons of people driving around in blaze, on my way to work I didn't see a single person in blaze orange. I saw lots of trucks slowly crusing back roads at sunrise not a single stich of orange. The local NRO's sarcastically joke about it "you don't need orange if you're not gonna get out of the truck to shoot". People in public places openly talk about poaching, and here's the real KITA, will ##### and moan endlessly about "natives taking all the ________". insert whatever here. People complaining about low moose populations, who then admit to shooting 4 moose, at night and only taking two back, cause they shot the hindquaters of one, and the other was to far from the road. This is completely typical in this area. Its nuts.
 
78a and b zones in ontario are very ad for this too... Baiting rifle hunting, spot lighting. Rifle shooting turkeys and I think we might have more hens shot in turkey season than jake or tom... Mnr is a joke around here

MNR dont do there job well thats for sure i dont see much of them around

no doubt poaching is done everywhere common gun for it .22lr i bet there is plenty of moose walking around with a few scars

Last year while cleaning turkeys (legally harvested) my uncle found one with some 00 in the leg.

The other one I like is Asian people who catch musk turtles or fish bass out of season INFRONT of the mnr and they simply sy its a racial issue and they won't deal with it... But that same guy not even a year later gave me a ticket for no helmet on my 4 wheeler whilst bringing a deer out.. No racial issue nailing me for something that has no bearing on natural resources

In defense of the MNR, not seeing them is due to government cut backs not by choice of the MNR. They do the best they can with an ever shrinking budget. They do have a hotline for guys and gals like us to report poaching when we see it.

See above, they only crack down on people who are actually trying to follow the rules. Saying its due to budget cuts is a piss poor excuse. I would say its got more to do with laziness and lack of care for their job

I would say it has more to do with the amount of land each CO has to cover, due to lack of funding. I have have run ins with them, I follow the rules so that doesn't bother me at all. Guess we would have to agree to dis-agree on that. Next time you see poaching call it in, seen a guy down this way popping turkeys 2 summers ago, I reported the goof and the MNR nailed him. Happined 2 farms down from mine. I don't mind helping them out

Spotlightin game is big time down under..... seems every bastard an their dog goes away for the weekend, n somehow ends up with a 30+ inch model sambar, or good fallows etc..... they are slowly cracking down on it but its BS, literally have to catch them in the act.

i absolutly hate spotlighters, an poachers..... scum in my book

i guess it would be worse there lots of land with very little too stop them heck you need to be on dirt bike to get through most if it by the looks of things

only thing legal to hunt at night in ontario is racoons only .22 rimfire and you must have a dog
 
MNR zone 73 is another area for baddys spotlighting,tresspassing on our farm property.A few years ago a neighbour called over and asked us if were seeing lights and ufos in the back fields at night during the winter.I,ve hunted untill sundown then returned nextday at sunrise and theres already fresh hunting tracks in the snow from overnight poachers.Thanks--Dieseldog!
 
You guys doing all the complaining don't have a Report a Poacher Line, like we do in Alberta ? Phone call to the right people can do wonders. :(

Why are you talking in riddles? Unless you work at Area 51 in Nevada, just spit it out. The only geographical barrier in MB is water( Lake Wpg or MB), unless of course you think Riding Mountain National Park is an impenetrable mountain range?
 
If you have hunting you will have poaching, and it is not a racial issue either.

It seems at this point that the act of poaching is just something that happens and is accepted by the powers that be.The law abiding hunters are the most frustrated but even with the turn in poachers line little is or can be done it seems.

Guess one just has to worry about yourself and decide if you are wanting to hunt to do it legally or , well the other way.
 
It's kinda reminds me of criminals using guns illegally and not getting charged while the legal hunter is hounded over a paper crime. The ciminals win and the goood guys loose and the wildlife....while 12 cow Elk with 10 in foal are slaughter for food buy 3 people who claim to care about the land.
 
I have met and know many poachers, most are trophy collectors. I hate to say it, but most people I know with houses and shops full of bone, collected most if not all of it by poaching, either at night, herding them into water with dogs, trespassing or whatever. It seems a lot more common than those of us that actually hunt. And by hunt I don't mean driving around looking for something to shoot.

Also, they are almost always white.... so no need for anyone to jump on the racial attacks.
 
20 years ago deer poaching was rampant around here and the deer population showed it! Then for 5 yrs. there was a huge crackdown on poaching. There were numerous charges even to selling venison, the fines were huge and that kinda worked, the deer population recovered. The attitude of Public and next generation hunters has also improved. Poaching is not COOL anymore! However the last few years Conservation Officers are a rare sight in this area! Respectfully. Jim
