you can trim your existing spring too. the problem is that the ejection is too energetic, causing the spent case to bounce off the bottom of the scope mount and back into the breech. trimming the spring so it gets out, but without enough energy to bounce back in, is the goal. norks seem to have too-powerful springs for scope use.
if you don't have a bolt tool, you can do without. more of a PITA, of course. good instructions and pics at ht tp://m14forum.com/reference/39852-bolt-disassembly-rifle-no-bolt-tool.html. you do need a 30-06 casing, and patience.
