Hey, just recently purchased a poly M305 full length and after now joining this forum I'm wondering if I got myself in over my head. I picked it up for $399 new thinking I had a cheap little plinker to play with but after reading one too many posts on here about these chinese rifles blowing up in faces I'm wondering if I made a big mistake. Wasn't planning on dumping cash into this toy and tinkering to bring her up to code. Are these rifles really that bad?

Take it out and shoot it. You can use it as is or do upgrades to your hearts desire. First, get out and shoot it. I have yet to see one blow up in anyones face. Did I mention to get out and shoot it?

In a word NO! If you look hard enough you will find problems with any rifle. They are a solid, inexpensive rifle. Get out there and shoot.

Forget 99% of the crap you read on these posts. Such issues are very isolated incidents at best. The vast majority of us have had zero issues. I bought a long barrel m305 last year, put a new op rod spring and guide in it. Have put close to 500 rounds through it with not so much as a jammed round. Zero issues. Clean and maintain it and you will be golden. Like the other guys have said here, GET OUT and shoot the thing!!!!!

I am new to this rifle as well I just got mine a 2012 shorty make sure you clean off the cosmoline then give it a grease job , from my research there seems to be a couple bad apples out there , no matter which firearm you shoot there is a small risk of catistrofic failure just like anything really flying driving for a 400$ bad ass battle rifle it's a risk I'm willing to take !

It's a "diamond in the rough"; both metaphorically and literally.

You can have a great amount of fun tweaking them into a diamond like many here. It's a wonderful and rewarding learning curve.

Hey you can get almost all of your money back if you want out of this platform!

Cheers and welcome to the addiction!

there was another new guy on here a few months ago. he asked a bunch of questions, got answers, said he was off to the range to test fire the rifle, then we never heard from him again. I always assumed his rifle exploded and killed him.

just kidding. they work somewhere between good and great, depending on the individual rifle. even the good ones are fun as heck.

Yep....get on out there and shoot the bugger. Aint no shame in holding the thing at arms length for the frst round, I did :) , as long as no ones watching of course :) Get down to one of Barneys clinics first chance you get and you will learn all you need to know, and save yourself a whole bunch of cash tweaking it yourself. Ive got well over 1500 rds thru mine and the only fail to eject I had was with some lousy brass. Im still searching for the ping, but sub 2 moa with handloads ( on a good day ) is good enough for me.
Just wish the Queen was still paying for the ammo :). You are gonna have so much fun and of course you will catch that " sh*t eatin smile " that seems to afect everyone who shoots these guns.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. All the information is greatly appreciated - I'm looking forward to learning about these rifles more on here. I'll probably get a chance to put a few rounds through it sometime this week and we'll see just what kind of pea shooter I've bought.

first one blew up in my face... second one just about did as well... bad bolts.

Have had issues with stove piping on the second one as well, gas system is to soft and needs constant reshimming.

both shot 2 inch groups out of the box then within a few hundred rounds widdned out to 8 to 10 inch groups.... then exploded in the case of the first one

Well that just sucks, glad you got away without serious injury ..I hope.
Got me wondering what year were these two lemons, just so I can avoid like the plague.

This guy works for springfield dont listen :) JK

I wonder if there is a list of things somebody could do if they bought a new rifle and wanted to be extra careful? easy stuff they could do by themselves or whatever.

1. check headspace. check again after 100 rounds

2. check bolt for peening after 20 rounds again at 200?

3. check barrel index to see if its way off

jus' brainstorming

For those of us who aren't gunsmiths could you please elaborate on how exactly you do each of these things?
