Just so were clear, when did the red hair law come into play? Is this just BC? I've just dyed my hair, and consulted with a plastic surgeon, who assures me he can graft the tip of my pinkie finger to my foot, next time I'm in Mexico. Full auto, here I come! Thanks for the tip (no pun intended) SFRC!

Hey everyone I found this link it seems like firearm owners can purchase a body armour licence similar to a PAL after we pass the government approval process. We then can legally own body armour it wont be recorded what we buy but is set up to stop the body armour getting into criminal hands. After December 2012 you could face the fines and charges mentioned in the website if your found with this armour. http://www.solgps.alberta.ca/programs_and_services/public_security/BACAct/Pages/default.aspx

Time to wade in....in Alberta if you have a firearms license you are exempt. Thank JR at The Shooting Edge for that.

Secondly, Controlled Goods Program is very difficult to join and maintain membership. You are only allowed to join if you show a reason (i.e. a contract with another controlled goods company). Then you have to register yourself and your company under the program, submit to audits, etc. It is a MAJOR undertaking. Not to stop anyone from trying it, but it is a lot of work. Ask me how I know...

Controlled goods are "more or less" handled the way you would handle a prohib weapon. They can't be examined by people without Controlled Goods certification and they have to be kept secure and not be transferred without a permit. I don't think you want to go there.

Sorry about the wait, I forgot to post the update, I spoke with them in detail a number of times.

Controlled goods and DFAIT both say that Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 armour are a controlled and are not to be sold to civilians that are not registered with controlled goods.

That being said they are still seeking clarification if expired lvl 3 and lvl 4 armour are still a controlled good.

You aren't exempt for Lvl 3 and Lvl 4, just everything else. Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 are controlled on a Federal level. They were very clear about this when we spoke.

Not that I'd ever discourage anyone from buying something just for the sake of it, and I do think people should have the right, but why do so many people want body amour? When I was in the militia, I hated wearing my flak jacket. Serious question.

Serious answer: If you're stuck in a city of one million plus and something really bad should happen -- think SHTF a la major pandemic, solar flare EMP etc -- you alone will be responisble for your family's welfare. The government as usual (think New Orleans and Katrina) will be looking the other way. If armed looters/criminals knock on your door -- or kick it in -- wouldn't you feel better with a semi in your hands and used Level III or IV body armour on?

The question remains, if it is not to be sold to "civilian" unless registered, how to can "civilian" get it registered ?

arming up and such could possibly make your self a target, I would rather wear dirty blankets and fake bubonic plague scabs then a tacvest and an assault rifle in a wrol or shtf senerio.

That being said I probably would like to have the option of doing things "the hard way" so maybe in preperation of the disguise not working I would wrap an sks in plastic and grease and put it and a battle box of 7.62 in a tupperware container filled with rice, and then burry it in my yard but thats not safe storage so I would never even consider it.

Do you realize that body armor is not just a protection against SHTF, but also against drunk FUDD during hunting season, ricochets and other mess. If it was just me, I would also bring a kevlar helmet (not just for the tactiCOOL factor), but there are harder to come by...

ps: yes, my paranoia level is pretty high.

Lvl IIIA is less than III. Lvl I, II, IIA and IIIA are not controlled goods.

Thank you. I'd seen someone (not a business) selling IIIa, so I was curious.

There is a post about this on one of these threads. Basically you have to apply for a controlled goods licence. There is a big list of people/professions that qualify for this. I'm not sure if an average hunter/shooter like any of us would even get licenced or not if we aren't on their list

As an electrician I often wear NOMEX and very specific arc-flash gear: it protects from the heat, flames, UV rays and electrocution that can cause some horrific injury and death. It does not protect you from any flying objects created by the electrical arc.

About 10 years ago I was standing in front of a live, closed panel when another tradesperson (not an electrician, BTW) caused a massive short circuit (600Volt at 100Amps RMS for you electricians out there): the result was the panel door being blown off and traveling in my direction at high speed. I got my hands up instinctively to protect my chest area and took a 3" shard of steel in the left hand between my fingers through a set of heavy gloves. I was specifically told my cotton t-shirt and thin NOMEX coveralls would have been a waste of time to protect from puncture damage: I could have been killed. cou:

There are many more reasons to wear some PPE like these (something like a level 1 or 2 stab-proof tee-shirt, wife beater style) than just a SHTF or military or LEO application. Another one of those situations: if you have it you never need it, but when you don't chance/luck/circumstance/someone-else can make sure you end up hurt, maimed or dead. :yingyang:

Anyone on the south coast of BC knows the SHTF scenario that applies to us - even the government is constantly telling us to be prepared for a massively destructive earthquake. Depending on where you live (especially Surrey and Burnaby) you may be repelling armed intruders, on your own, in the dark. Good reason for body armour (if it's a good reason to have an EQ kit, it's a good reason for decent armour).
