Hey guys, i have a Q

If the valmet is an AK action, why is it nobody transforms them into AK looking rifles? They look like a dogs breakfast as is, why not make it better looking?

Am i missing something here?

I saw that one for sale too, in .243 no less, if it looked like an AK too, then I would be interested, as it certainly functions similarly to one. Otherwise it's ugly as sin IMO, really needs a pistol grip. To each their own though.

yeah one would think if you dressed it up to look AKish, you could ask even more for it. While still including the original furniture.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, and i looked for a sticky, but what models of valmet can we buy non-restrickted?

Well, not really. The valmet plant produced full auto rifles and various other military things.

The I understood that there were two semi-only valmets that were explicitly non-restricted. A .223 and a .308 rifle.

There have been some awesome Galil conversions done with those.

Simply put, the Valmets do not share most components with the AK. The fire control parts are the same but furniture usually won't interchange save for the pistol grip, and I don't believe the front trunnion will accept AK barrels. Valmet Hunters are even more work to convert because of the layout. Mags also cost a fortune unless you decide to pay through the nose for a 7.62x39 model or try converting M-14 or G3 mags. And of course when you pay $4-8K for a rifle you're usually not open to butchering it up strictly for aesthetics sake.

Valmets are certainly an AK action but they're as much an AK-47 as an SR-25 is an AR-15, if that makes sense. Same method of operation, some interchangeability in components, but not a one-for-one copy.

Just the M78 and Hunter models can be owned without a prohibited endorsement on your PAL. Every other model is prohibited.
