Sks-d bolt hold open

Hey guys, I got a question for you. I have a Norinco SKS model D, the one that has been modified to accept AK mags. I am wondering if anyone has figured out a way to make the bolt hold open, both for loading the magazine and also on the last shot.

If it is an SKS-D then it has not been modified to take AK mags, it was built that way at the factory. AK mags are not designed to hold the bolt open.

Does your SKS have a stripper clip slot in the bolt carrier ?
 
AK mags, with the exception of some Yugoslavian made ones, do not have a provision for a bolt hold open. If you were to find one of those Yugo mags (no idea where you would) then the bolt would hold open on your SKS-D, but would likely slam shut when you removed the magazine or loaded a round into it.

By Norinco at the factory, yes. "Conversion" tends to suggest aftermarket work.

Correct, Yugoslav M70 mags will hold the bolt back but in reality, any AK mag follower could be modified to do the same. Do a google search for "Yugo BHO mags" and you'll find some info.

There is not really much point in holding the bolt back for reloading magazines without a stripper clip guide in the bolt carrier, it's easier to remove the magazines.

That's true but BHO mags weren't designed to allow for loading from stripper clips. They were designed to let the shooter know the mag was empty rather than drawing a bead on an enemy and hearing *click*.
 
Everyone is right - I have a "D" with different mags, including three of the 5/30 Yugos (I learned what these were from a previous post) DO hold the bolt open on an SKS-D but (as noted above) the bolt slams home as I remove them; and it makes removing them more difficult.

Stripper clips are faster to reload, it seems to me...I've had a few regular SKS's over the years as well so lots of chances to compare.

when a "D" was first converted in the US they put a BHO in the carrier .

the carrier wont stay back after the last shot but you will be able to pull it back and lock it, and then use stripper clips .
 
I had an sks D and one that would hold the bolt open. I let my buddy borrow the gun and he came back with his pinky all mangled.. I guess he tried to manually load the mag whilst in the gun and the bolt slammed shut catching only his smallest most fragile finger.. Although I found it pretty funny just be really careful with hold open mags
