28 ga--Best powder for Skeet loads

I have reloaded for many years...12 and 20 ga...and have recently started shooting 28ga, Love it, but as you that also shoot it know, factory ammo can be pricey. I love the 28 for pigeons, and grouse,,,really effective and so much fun. At any rate, I'm at a loss with all these new powders out there. What do you guys think is most effective, or usefull. I shoot a lot of skeet also.

I will keep using UNIQUE as long as they make it. Never given me a problem and I reload both types of AA hulls, STS with it for skeet and trap and Federals for the hunting reloads. Also use it in my 20ga and 16ga reloads also
Bad year would be normally 5000 rounds of 28ga

I've loaded mostly Unique but recently bought a pound of Universal Clays to try. Both are good. Universal Clays seems to burn a little cleaner but is finer than Unique and some flakes spill out of the loader. When I'm finished with the Universal next to try is Alliant 20/28.
 
You can't go wrong with either Unique, Longshot or 20/28 I have used the first 2 for years and recently the 20/28 and all three are excellent powders.

I am also a unique fan. I use it for 16,20 and 28. It is easier to get in 8lb containers and less money than 20/28. I did try 20/28 and it was a little cleaner. I went back to unique to do 16 as well. I am now trying a 5/8 oz load that works well in 28.
 
I use Green Dot, works well for me. Just happens I have an 8 lb keg of it. Unique works well too. In fact almost any shotgun powder will do. I have a MEC 600 JR and I have problems with the crimp and crushed hulls, any fixes out there,guys? I just got a bag of #9 shot, I think this might help. 7 1/2 shot seems to be the problem getting a consistent crimp.

What hulls are you using? Which wad as well? I wouldn't think that switching shot size would help much (at least from 7.5 to 9)

What hulls are you using? I've found with Winchester AAHS how they crimp depends on the position of the hull in the crimp starter.

Try your hulls position on the loader like this. I find this results in better crimps.

Avoid positioning them like this. I find this often results in poorly folded crimps.

Something worn on your crimp starter. They rotate on the ball they snap onto and you never have to look at position you place the hull in the keeper. Does yours spin freely

That's what I thought too at first but the crimp starter does spin freely.

Hole could be worn and tipping off to one side. For the price pop a new one on with the new stud and give it a try. You should never have to position a hull rotated a certain way in a mec to make it crimp better.
The black plastic ones do wear out quite frequently.
 
Another idea would be to contact MEC directly. I've never done it, but I'm told that their support for addressing problems and helping you with adjustments is excellent.
