Target Pistol

Get yourself a used Ruger MKII. Inexpensive, reliable, and fairly plentiful. Shouldn't cost you much more than $300 for a stock blued gun with a magazine or two, and no more than $400 for a stock Stainless gun. It'll cost you more if there are accessories, magazines or other upgrades bundled with the gun.

I would suggest the Ruger Mark II or III 5.5" bull barrel target model. Good gun, very reliable and accurate for the first time shooter. Get a better pair of grips than the stock ones as well. I have owned two of these guns and my current target gun is the Mark III stainless with Hogue grips with a thumbrest.
I did check out the latest Browning offerings and I know of a couple of new shooters who have them and like them but they are not a lot cheaper than the Ruger.
 
Basic recreation or formal competition? The difference is $1000-1500. The mentioned guns are in the first category, Walthers GSP, Hammerli SP-20, Pardini SP models, Morini, benelli 90s, match gun, all fall in the latter. Have fun!
 
Personally, my favorite serious target .22 is my Margolin Vostok.

Unbelievably accurate, beautifully finished, all the spare parts you could ever need are included. Muzzle break, barrel weights, palm shelf, etc., all in the box. Very adjustable, easy to clean, several sets of sights included, and over the last 30 years, absolutely dead-bang reliable.

Can sometimes be found cheap in used gun stores.

What is your price range going to be? If you want to spend under $500 new for any of the Ruger targets are nice. If you want something more accurate under $1000 you can get a Smith and Wesson Model 41 or a High Standard used. In the $1500 dollar range you are now into a Hammerli or Pardini. All nice firearms but it depends on your budget and what you are using them for.

Where did you get the hogue grips with thumb rest from I can't find them anywhere I've looked
 
someone has a Ruger Mark III Target wblued 5.5" bull barrel in the EE right now...case, 4 mags + the pistol for $420. Pistol usually goes for closer to $500 new.

at the same time, if you're willing to spend a bit of money, Sylvestre Sports in Bonnyville, AB has some Voltzquartzen modified Ruber Mark III Targets he's clearing out at cost. That's a $1200 pistol going for about $750.

I bought my grips through Brownell's. $20/each. You can find some on Amazon as well...but the vast majority are out of stock currently :p
 
Years ago The Ruger auto was my first target handgun . I loved it then .Now I still like them , but most out of the box ruger trigger's are a bit heavy for my liking . Go to a shooting range where they shoot handgun and try a magazine or two from everyone who will let you . Most shooter's will be happy to let you try out their toys. Try out the trigger on the Browning Buckmark you might like it. This winter at the indoor range , my most shot pistol was a Kimber conversion on a higher end 1911 frame . I like it a lot. But I would have to say for pure enjoyment my Smith mod 17 is #1.

And then get yourself an Ultimate Cliploader to load magazines.

The Mk I doesn't have the last shot bolt hold open (maybe some late versions have it), and they don't have scallops around the bolt ears.
