Hi all,

I finally bought my first 22lr rifle and it is Mark II FV....

The plan is as usual. Replace the stock and accurize within normal limits.

Boyd's stock

But here is my issue. I cannot find an aftermarket parts here in Canada.

Can anyone suggest where in Canada or US (if available) to buy parts. Such as improved bottom metal, trigger guard, longer bolts for the laminate stock.....and so on.

Last year I replaced the original synthetic stock on my Mk.II FVT with a Boyd's thumbhole stock. End result very good. Got all the necessary 'hardware' directly from Savage in the U.S. You have to phone them.

Here are the parts I obtained: 2 Long Action Screws (blued),#704346; 1 Trigger Guard (matte),#106963; 1 Mag Plate M-II, Boyd Thumbhole,#106869; 1 R. Trigger GD Screw 5/32 Hex,#100264; 1 Mag Plate Screw (blued),#700688

You are wise to replace the cheapy original stock - these rifles are great shooters for the price and they deserve a decent stock.
 
I agree with Bluebell, and that's pretty much what I did with my MkII FV (although I bought a Boyd's "Tacticool" stock, before they were banned from export by the US due to the name "Tacticool" and, as such, were deemed US military technology).

There is a US company (DIP Products) that manufactures aftermarket bottom metal, screws, etc., but they, too, cannot be exported due to ITAR rules. So, Savage is the only remaining source that I'm aware of for these items. That having been said, I bought the same items that Bluebell did (with the exception of the bottom metal, which I fabricated myself from 1/8" cold-rolled steel), direct from Savage, with no issues whatsoever & at a reasonable price. The quality of the parts I received was very high.

The gun was a serious tack driver out of the box, and remains so even after I messed with it. The optic (a BSA Sweet 22 6-18X40 AO, bought used) has proven to be outstanding, contrary to some reviews I've read. The bipod is a UTG from Amazon.ca, does double duty on different rifles, and has been excellent.

The photo doesn't really portray the brawniness of this thing. It's big, it's solid, cheeks very well, and is incredibly accurate. Total bill for the build, including original rifle, tax, shipping, etc. was around $400 (and I ended up with a spare, matte black Bushnell 3-9X40 & mounts, that came new with the rifle).

Gotta love those Savage MkII's!!
 
Not to hijack but i just ordered all the bottom hardware from Savage .Cost was 48.00 with shipping,tried to order the TRR-SR stock it was 173.00.Only way they would ship it was UPS.So i didnt order it.I'll try and get a boyd's thumbhole now.

Also i tried to drder the tactical oversize bolt lever through Savage.But they dont sell just the lever,any ideas on how to get one??

also just ordered the Boyd's VARMINT THUMBHOLE in pepper for 149.30 shipped.

Turn down the knob and thread the existing handle or buy a new bolt. 22lrguy got the bolt he said it was $84

You can do that, for sure. There's a guy on Rimfirecentral who's been doing this mod for a while, and made a jig to hold the bolt so he can lathe turn the knob. Does nice work, too! Don't know if he's still doing them for fellow forum people or not, but I do recall he wasn't charging much for his work. Of course, I have no idea what kind of hassles there'd be getting your bolt to & from a private citizen in the US (ITAR-wise, that is...)

Ordering a new bolt will also work, but it MUST be properly headspaced by a gunsmith BEFORE shooting it for it to be safe.

I bought my Tacticool from Boyd's exactly one year ago - delivered, to my door, taxes all in, for $135.90. They were keeping the prices on stocks below $100 to stay below the ITAR limit for export. If you wanted the extra metal bits, you had to make a second order to avoid exceeding the limit.

I wonder if Savage could be asked to ship USPS, due to the consistent raping of Canadians by Oops...I mean, UPS. Most US companies I've dealt with haven't minded shipping USPS when asked, even if their shipping policy is UPS. Most seem to understand the issues we face with UPS here, and want to keep us happy...

Boyds wont ship that stock anymore as it was deemed military technology by the powers that govern.

You have to make 2 separate orders if you want the screws and metal from boyds as they can not ship orders over $100 before shipping.

Very true. That one can still be ordered direct from Savage, as a "replacement" stock for a TRR or similar MkII, albeit at a higher cost. It is the exact same stock - Boyd's manufactures them for Savage...but Savage doesn't use the name "Tacticool", so it's perfectly okay to export them. Makes sense, right?:rolleyes:

The stocks that boyds makes for savage are a little different in shape but not much. The savage bv is also a little different then the boyds nutmeg laminate rimfire hunter stock.

I explained to the lady at Savage about the UPS bull and she said that is how they ship the stocks.So i ordered varmint thumbhole from Boyds.I got the hardware and stock for just under 200.00
