When I got my sks for christmas last year I was not pleased with the beaten up, oily, old stock. So initially I TAPCO'd and "tacticool'd" it so it went from this

To this. I have no complaints with the tapco stocks, installation was easy (minus the painful removal of the gas tube hand guard). I like the different lengths you can make the rifle with the 6 position stock. I then added an extended mag release, tapco 25rnd magazines, bolted on a rail (this version has the bayou cut), added a magpul afg, and removed the bayo.

But then i decided to order some of the 30/5rnd metal mags that came up on the EE, which made me want to re-finish my old hardwood stock. So i sanded it down and did 3 coats of red mahogany stain, and then 3 coats of satin poly (keep in mind I am in no way a professional and it was sort of a test project for me)
After sanding (for like 4 hours by hand)

Finished project, fairly pleased with the results. Gives it an old rustic look with a very nice smooth, satin surface

Overall I like both variations and for different reasons. I like the look of the wood stock much better, although i enjoy shooting the tapco stock more (lighter, longer length of pull, pistol grip, etc.) I have also since done the grip mod (which is literally cutting out enough plastic so you can get the trigger group out without unbolting the pistol grip every time) so I can change between the two set ups in about a minute.

Let me know what you guys think! Enjoy and happy shooting.

Looks good, but lose the 30rd magazine. It will never be an AK.

The original magazine is designed as such for a reason. To shoot the SKS properly in a standing or crouched position you must rest you palm on the magazine. Most western shooter tend to have their hands too far forward on the stock.

was not aware of that, thanks. Definitely considering buying another one this summer and leaving it completely stock as i like shooting my sks the most... and the ammo and rifles can't get any cheaper lol

wouldnt you hold it on the where the 'finger grips' are cut into the forestock.

Here is a manual in Russian, use google translate.

This is why people complain about accuracy problems. There are stances that use the grips, but I find the top stance works the best, and feels most comfortable.

No problem, I too thought about 30rd magazines, but it just makes the rifle worse. The SKS is best in stock form.

I'm refinishing a SKS stock right now. I used gel type paint stripper and it removed the stain completly with no effort. After it was done I wiped it with a damp cloth and put it in front of the heater to dry. I was shocked to see how much cosmoline was sweating out of the wood. I am still trying to get all the cosmoline out before I sand and stain it.

One thing I've noticed in my short stint so far here at CGN is that Gun Nutz sure love photographing their feet along with their firearms! :)

That's pretty cool ! Thanks . I learn something on CGN every day .

I must admit, I like the cheese grater hand guards, they add to the look and appear OEM. Might have to get one for my Type 56.
