I believe that you need tto know your range and have the skill, but man oh man, this one nice cartridge for coyote, fox, etc.

Anyone using their own .22 mag for such?
What ammo are you using?

Fiokey (;) doing 1900 fps is deadly accurate in mine. 2200 fps would be nice...picked some up today.

I've dropped a couple coyotes with a .22, only 50 yards or less but if it can get the job done I don't doubt the magnum can either. I normally use a 250 but I just recently bought a very expensive .17 hmr setup and thats what I used this winter.

I wouldnt hesitate to use my 22 mag on coyotes out to 100 yards. I know the gun is extremely accurate and if it was presented and conditions right, a clean headshot would not be an issue.

I use a 22 mag all the time dipatching wolves and coyotes in traps/snares. Shoot a wolf in the heart with it and you wouldn't believe how they drop. It doesn't matter if it's 10 feet or 25 yds. They die quick! Since I got my ruger model 96 I've let some buddies shoot foot trapped wolves with it. Both guys went and bought their own 22 mags afterwards. Coyotes are no problem to 100 yds.

worms, you say! Yeah, but I'm not in the mood! Very sick with the flu. :p. Well, I don't hunt with my 22 mag, but I carry it on my sled for protection. Never know when you may break down and have to walk in the bush trails. There are yotes, wolves and cougars in these parts. It's a compact little Stevens 305, a short lil rascal. Fits nicely on the side of the hood in a scabbard. I can draw it with my left hand and keep my right hand on the throttle. I shoot left, so it works out just dandy. It only came with a 5 round DM, I'm waiting and waiting for them to produce more of the 10 round. I have a case of Hornady 30 Gr. V-Max. Ballistics: Muzzel 2200 fps, 100 yds 1421 fps and 200 yrds 1002 fps.
I just purchased an M6 Scout Survival o/u in 22 Hornet and 410, but I'll have to make a different carry case for when I carry that rifle.

Almost sounds like you have a loaded firearm on your motor vehicle and plan to shoot from one. :)

I shot one coyote with a Winchester 9422magnum years back. It was a cut hay field, hay was still in windrows and all I saw was the coyotes head and the top of his shoulders at 125 yards. First shot hit him high in the shoulder and knocked him down, he got back up right away but with the short stroke of the 94 I was able to rack another round faster than he could get up. When he stuck his head up, it was centered under my crosshairs, I squeezed another round off and he was down for good with a bullet to the cranium. I now think that the 22 magnum is probably just barely adequate for coyotes, they are much bigger than 20 years ago and seem to be getting smarter too. Would I take that shot again with a 22 magnum? Yes. Would I rather have my 243? YES!

I am not judging anyone else, shoot 'em up with the 22mag if it is working for you. It worked for me too, but I prefer a little more umph!

Well if it's all you have then by all means use it. Stick with 50 grain Federal or 40 grain Win HP's and keep the shots close.Like 50 yards close.

I have shot quite a few over a few years with a 22 magnum as at one time i thought it would be an ideal round for saving fur but it most certainly is not an ideal calibre for calling and killing coyotes.

Awesome fox and bobcat gun though.

You can't compare hunting them to shooting them in traps.I have done both and they are not even close to the same thing.

Coyote's are damn tough.Be prepared to shoot again as soon as you can. Also be prepared to get lots of runners if you use the Maggie.

Even with perfect shot placement.

I am sure that you will get a few people that have the vast experience of shooting one or two coyote's with one chiming in telling you it is the be all end all only gun for coyote you will ever need.

For something cheap to carry around for the off chance you may get a close shot at one sure. For a dedicated reliable DRT coyote killer. Not even close.

If you have hunted any amount of coyotes you will know enough to disregard any "sure it is great just make sure to shoot them in the head" comments that i am sure will follow as the advice of the inexperienced.

That statement usually seems followed by" yeah it works great i shot one three years ago in the head and it worked awesome" or something like that.

Shooting two or three coyotes with one is not near enough of a large enough sample pool to decide it is a great coyote calibre.

If you have called any amount of them you will know that trying to hit a target (brain) a little bigger then a golf ball on a coyote in field conditions while it is moving it's head all around is not an easy thing to do. Sure you will get the odd one to stand still and give you the perfect still head shot at close range, but not consistently.

However if it is all you have at your disposal.Use the bullets i mentioned.Forget about the lightweight plastic tipped ones and keep your shots really close.

So will a 22 Mag kill coyotes. Sure will. Is it a good dedicated coyote calibre.

Not even close, and completely forget about the 17HMR as a coyote rifle. Great for fox though.

There.... Consider the can of worms fully opened and wriggling out now.

Almost, but not quite! The DM is loaded, you betya, but it ain't in the gun. I would only shoot from the seat if something is charging at me and wouldn't hestitate for a second, if it was to be either it or me that carries on breathing! I hope that clears it all up for you!

Full moon coming up, today, what did ya expect for topic!

... and ya, we had tons of yotes howling last night at the farm house. Keeping on topic, .223 Nosler 60 gr. and/or No. 4 buck in shotty should do it.

Two coyotes. Not near enough large of a sample to make it a great choice for coyote. All that that proves is that yes it works under ideal circumstances.

Is this the same guy that posted it on Predatormasters or Rimfire central? Can't remember which. Maybe he has shot a few more since he first showed those video's.

I have had similar kills with the Maggie as well but i have also had alot more runners then DRT with it. Usually find them but they can go a ways. Coyote's don't always stand there perfect like that.

Still doesn't make it a great coyote gun. I am sure you could find a few video's of some one shot coyote kills with the HMR as well but it still doesn't make it a great coyote round IMHO.

However, if that's what you want to use have at it. After you get 20 or 30 under your belt with it i think you will see what i am talking about though.

For me, my dedicated coyote rifles have been a 22-250 and a 223wssm...though I have taken more opportunity coyotes with the 30-30.

That said, I have taken a few with the 22 mag... As well as domestic animals at moderate range and gophers and badgers, etc.

I think at my one stand ( will throw up some pics tomorrow) that it is a nice cartridge, .... If I can see a coyote there, he is already within 80 yards.

One of My other stands is on a 400 yard cut,... The mag is not ideal there 90% of the time.

Well it sounds like you know it's limitations and capabilities quite well already then, and you have more suitable calibre's for other situations.Have at it.Sounds like you have all your bases covered.

I will say though. It is indeed a nasty little cartridge and it just seems to have way more power then it reasonably should. Just not my pick for a do it all coyote rifle is all.

I do cringe a little when i am on one forum or another and someone new to coyote hunting ask about a good coyote calibre and some guy who has shot one or two coyote's in his life recommends it to a new coyote hunter as a great coyote cartridge.

It works fine when used within it's limitations but i am sure you already new that when you posted.

Like i said it is a nasty little cartridge in the right hands.

Your snowmobile must be pretty slow if you can't outrun a charging coyote. ;) :D
