I'm getting the itch. The one only an AR-15 can scratch. This will be my first AR, and first firearm build. Where do I start? Are there any resources you can point me towards? I would appreciate any and all input. I know this is vague, but I plan a short barrel, otherwise, I'm open to ideas.

All I can say is keep your eyes open. Supply is getting fairly uncertain, and stuff that comes in stock is sometimes gone within hours.

Motiuk had some parts last I checked.

you will need a upper vice block and a wrench to assemble it all

consider if you want a standard handguard or free float handguard, as some parts will be different

millions of configurations otherwise

Brownells has a lot of really good step by step videos as well. They also have instructional sheets that show all the parts you need.

I'm in the process myself.

I have specific things on my list and thought a ground up build from a stripped lower was a good idea.

Step one: I couldn't find a stripped lower! lol
Got a complete Stag lower instead, then found a stripped Spikes Upper.

Now I can't find a BCG, Barrel, Gas System, or HandRail in stock anywhere. Let alone the stock/grip that I want.
So, I pre-ordered a complete upper today instead.
Who knows when it'll be in stock, but at least I can stop searching the depths of the internet for unobtainable parts and just keep my eyes peeled for a stock, grip, buis, rds, free-float rail and muzzle device.

If you can find a quality rifle in the length that you want, buy it and swap out what you want as it becomes available.

Edit: Buy any mags you can find!
Questar has loads of lar mags and NOBODY has any pmags.

I've had a couple ARs and this build I'm going all out. I just special ordered a Vltor stripped upper and Vltor built lower and Nickel boron BCG from a site sponsor. the Barrel and gas system is undetermined at the time but probably noveske barrel and AA gas piston or CMMG piston kit. Depends whats in stock when I buy it.

I plan on stretching this out and piecing it together to get what I want. I'll check my local store next week to see what they have. And I'll check out youtube. I'll definitely check out Brownells, those sheets sound like just what I was looking for.

Dawson85, I'm building almost the same rifle. Vltor upper/lower, Nickel Boron BCG. Having an 8.5" barrel made by ATRS as I write this. Can't wait to see it when it's done.

Or you can buy the Brownells barrel extension torque tool. It's what they suggested to me for building a Vltor upper or any upper for that matter.

I am doing the exact same thing, stretching it out so I can get what I want. Already got my first piece, a Magpul MOE pistol grip!! I have also preordered the STI Matched Upper and Lower from Freedom Ventures.

If you are building with a VLOTR upper keep in mind that you need a pins-style upper vise block. The regular clamshell ones won't work.

Good to know.

I'm just curious how long it will take to come in.

To the op.

Brownells seems to be sold out of everything lately, I've recently started buying from questar they're great to deal with, also for optic mounts, rails, grips and stock. I've decided to give my money to one shot tactical in Trenton.

just starting thinking of my first build tonight!
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...-Blue-Line-Spring-Receiver-SALE!!-Only-119-99!!!
that cheap price made me get started.
i think im just gonna assemble the lower and get a complete upper as i hear its a pain to assemble uppers.
doesnt seem to hard to build, just a lot of configuration choices.
cant wait till my lower gets here! sell off my norc and help fund this project

I would just buy something from Daniel Defense and add some bells and whistles from there.

That's what I plan on doing when I get my rPAL
