How to go about an M-16A1 (not auto) build?

I'd like to build in the near future an M-16A1 semi-automatic rifle. Where to get the parts is a mystery to me now that the United States have closed the border with us as regards firearms. Rome and her colonies all over again!
I'd lie to have Colt parts. How should I go about doing this?

If it is marked M16 on the receiver regardless of the internals, the feds will seize it and scrutinize it as a full auto or converted auto. You can have any number of AR15 versions as long as they aren't marked with the wrong words.

I saw a Vietnam era colt (triangle hand guards et al) at a gunshow in Tompkins SK a few weeks back.....

I had the guys info around here somewhere, but I have no idea where it is..... He will likely be at the show in Swift on the 6th and 7th......

Want I should make a few inquiries?

There are lots of M16A1s floating around in places like the Philippines, Israel and Italy. An alternate route may be to buy one there somehow, have the receiver destroyed and all other parts shipped to you (without entry into the US of course). I don't know if this is feasible, but it might be worth looking into.

SP1 is far removed from military and modern AR's. It was designed not to be compatible with the military M-16. As such it will not be able to use modern parts should parts be broken so the SP1 is out.

Simply not true, the only part that's different on an SP1 is the front pivot pin is a larger diameter. You can swap triggers, bolts, carriers, buffers, barrels, etc to your hearts content.

If you want to switch uppers then a conversion pin will be required, or DD makes a large hole flattop upper.

The SP1 would be the most readily available option. Other options do exist, I have a PWA that is an exact clone of an M16A1, except that it's black as opposed to gray. Upper is USGI surplus, internals appear to be all Colt, and even the lower is A1 profile. You might try looking in the EE for PWA, Olympic or Sendra.

The SP1's have larger diameter holes for the take-down pins so they would require a a special pin to adapt to regular pin hole receivers. These are not totally successful. Colt was foolish for doing this in the first place.
I'd not own one.

Are NoDak Spud upper sand lowers available from dealers in Canada?

First you say you want to "build" an M16-A1.

Then myself (& others) recommend simply buying a complete Colt SP1, because it is the most similar (in all aspects) to an M16.

The fact the SP1 has oversized takedown pins should be irrelevant, unless you plan on changing the upper or lower out.

But then it wouldn't be an M16-A1 (clone) anymore... I doubt you'll ever find a reciever marked "M16-A1" for sale in Canada.
