.17 caliber handguns?

I plead ignorance as I am the old school where .22 was the only small rimfire cartridge. I wondered past the handgun cabinet in Wholesale sports and found a number of .17 calibre Baretta, Walther, etc. handguns. Is this size a rimfire? How are these handguns for owning one for target shooting. Is ammo just as available as .22?

You were looking at air pistols there. The Walther CP99 is .177 cal air pistol and I believe the Beretta you saw is the same.
But fear not, there are a few revolvers. Google a S&W 647 17 HMR and the Taurus Tracker.

I have a Ruger new single six in .17HMR. It's a necked down .22 magnum with ammo readily available

There is a .17HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire), as well as a .17 Remington(which is a centerfire cartridge), and a .17HM2.
However, as Easy 9mm said, you were probably looking at .177 airguns.

A .17HMR handgun would be interesting to try.

And damned expensive to feed. I go through .22 fast enough without upping the price by using .17HMR at somewhere around 4 to 5 times the price. Looking around a little the .17HMR is currently just a hair cheaper than 9mm ammo.

yes but I don't shoot near as much 17HMR as with 9mm or 22lr for that matter. 17hmr is more of a varmint round.

might have been air rifles...but I looked at the barrel and it looks the size of a .22 bout.

.17 is great for gophers but expensive to feed for a target pistol. Most people don't shoot pistols further then 50 meters so it wouldn't take advantage of the straighter shooting .17
