Hello all,

Just got my restricted course recently. Now looking to get a handgun.
Cabela's has a pretty good special- $600 for either a 9mm or .40 S&W. Which would you recommend?
Thank-you for the advice.

Unless you have deep pockets, or Canada miraculously allows CCW, I'd go 9. I have 2 .45s and a .40 and I much prefer shooting my 9's for economic reasons, plus it doesn't recoil as much.

S&W M&P9 Carry & Range Kit. Best deal out there right now unless you can find the M&P Range Pack. 9 is cheaper to shoot than .40. Plus you are shooting at paper anyways, it's not like you are carrying it. Save the money on the cost of ammo and buy another gun. IMO

9mm for cheap shootin then buy a .45 for grin factor and big holes, imo the .40 isnt very useful for what most of us use them for.

I started small. M&P 22....then 9. Now deciding which model to get next. They are both super fun to shoot. I love the weight of the M&Ps. I may just have to acquire the whole set! Not a fan of conversion sets, personally. I'd rather just add another pistol to the collection instead.

Happy shopping!

My preference is for 40. If you reload cost difference is not significant. My 9mm guns don't make it out quite as often as my 40s or 45s. As everyone likes to say in these threads - the paper doesn't care, but if that was all there is to it, we'd all be shooting 22.

How tight is it to get 9mm ammo. Has the price gone up drastically in Canada lately since the Homeland Security buy?

I was just contemplating this very same question. For me, I don't find the power of 9mm very satisfying, but I like the 9mm and respect its many virtues. I like the snap of the .40 So what I decided is to have them both in one pistol. I just bought a Glock 22 in .40 and an after market barrel in 9mm for under $200. For me, it will hopefully be ideal.

As I mentioned in the other thread, the .40 has little to offer unless you have to shoot through an intermediate barrier. Even if you aren't just shooting paper, the latest generation of JHP bullets has really narrowed the gap between 9mm and .40.

First handgun, get a 9mm. Then you'll expand your collection to include a 40 & 45 anyway... add in a .357, then .44 to infinity...

Welcome to the addiction

Start working some overtime to feed whatever you buy!

Agreed! And get in to IDPA or a similar competition style. Even if concealed carry was legal here a nervous wreck with a .45 is not better than a nervous wreck with a 9mm. 9mm is much cheaper, more widely available, lighter, and if you want the eternal question answered, which is better, 9 mm or .45? Either one put in the right spot--on the target paper of course.
