Prefered "Woods Loafing" Rifle

Holy thread revival....

While i was out in the hills with my wife and son today I kept thinking about getting a stainless 15" T/C Prohunter pistol barrel in 45-70 for my stainless T/C Prohunter.

Loaded with my 1895GS lever loads 300gr up to 550gr it would be a super short/fast handling thumper.
 
For pure woods walking pleasure I would take a .44-40 model 92. It is easy on the arms, not too noisey, makes targets react when hit, and they are accurate at woods ranges.

If a little more serious about deer then perhaps a .32 Special model 94, or an '86 in .33 or .45-70. If actually hunting then likely my 6.5 Swede. During grouse season my A.H. Fox 16 sxs or a Marlin 56, .22.

I would prefer to carry a revolver however in the east we can't be trusted with such things!
 
I ain't into walking in the woods anymore. I'm too old, got a bad foot, naw walking ain't for me! I only walk on the tread mill while watching the Young & Restless or around the acreage, oh yeah and in Walmart :p. I Quad or Sled or Jeep in the woods, now. I never go unarmed, no sir-e! I have carried just about everything at one time or another. My new carry is gonna be my recent purchase M6 Scout Survival rifle in 22 Hornet over 410. There is room for two on the rack, so something else will also be along. 12 ga sxs likely or maybe a 308 DM s/a. I spend a lot of time in the woods with my three dogs, when in the Jeep or 4 seater sxs.
 
I'm using this IMI Timberwolf in .357 Mag as my "bumming around" rifle these days. It's easier to carry than my 1895GS.

When I walk in the woods in the fall, unfortunately it's only for hunting, or work, no pleasure trips anywhere worth carrying a gun for. So it's a .375 H&H for hunting, and a .30 Mauser legal antique C-96 for work, it used to be a 12ga but they're too bulky and heavy. Before the C-96, and after the shotgun, I carried a Colt SAA .41 Colt legal antique for a year or so for work, spend more of my time in the bush than at home.

.44 mag rossi ranch hand. thanks to my amazing girlfriend who bought me a custom holster and belt for my mares leg, I will be carrying it no matter where I go in the bush for many years to come.
Ive been wearing my holster out while poppin rabbits for the last few weeks and it carries like a dream so thank you to Wanstalls and beaver mountain works who made it, I would recommend it to any one. also leaves me hands free for carrying things with a gun readily accessible for those hairy situations. ill be out bear hunting with it when a few more bears are roaming around in early may and deer hunting with it this fall, and if I can call in a moose to 15 yards, Ive got some hard cast lead solids that have bull winkle written all over them. good thing the belt came with 24 shell loops, i carry 44 special lead solids for rabbits, two different 44 mag rounds for bigger critters, 240 grain soft points, 305 grain lead solids. might even try some 44 special shot shells for grouse, I don't expect it to work at more than 5 yards but thats just fine for me.

That sounds like a seriously HOT LOAD... but if the gun doesn't blow up, it sure would be effective.
 
If deer or bear are open and the cover is fairly tight, I will be carrying an H&R Handi Ultra rifle with a full legth walnut/rosewood mannlicher-style stock... this is a combo gun with .30/30 and .44 Mag barrels... so depending on how open the cover is, I'll swap barrels...

If there is no deer/bear/moose season open, but wolves/coyotes/fox/coons are in the equation, I might carry a stainless synthetic Handi rifle in .22 K-Hornet/.410 combo...

If it is just a pleasant stroll for grouse our hares, I'll carry a Henry lever rimfire, generally my H001T Frontier, with Skinner peeps and Lyman 17 AUG... but if the mood is on me, it could be a Golden Boy .22 Maggie or Frontier in HMR...

If this is a dedicated and serious big game stroll... it would be a Ruger No.1 International 7X57...

But the Handi's and Henry's carry so well, they just feel "right" in the hand.
 
I carry a number of loafing guns. My favorite is my Winoku 92 Take Down in 32-20. Fits in my luggage for travelling the oil patch and is a ton of fun.
If bears are a real threat I carry a 444 Marlin and an air pistol for plinking.
My 22 is a 10-22 stock carbine with a Timney trigger and peep sights.
Varmint rifle is a H&R Handi in 22 Hornet.
Currently everything is iron sighted but I might scope the Hornet.
I've also started carrying a pellet rifle for gophers near buildings and busy hiking country.
