Prefered "Woods Loafing" Rifle

I picked up a 336 big lever loop and love it, potted a moose on opener in the head , looked like a matrix scene when it went over. it's short fat , a bit beefy but fun as hell . everyone that sees it wants a go with it . this year the group dissolved and a few that will hunt decided to go black powder,a member drew a tag for the bp season moose and deer is open the same time so looks like it might be a Lyman great plains hunter .can't wait to try at the chickens with that

Usually my Remington 7615 in .223, if I'm carrying a bunch of stuff like chainsaws or tree stands maybe my antique .41 Belgian Bulldog revolver. I just received my Stevens 305 shorty .22 so I think it will be carried quite a bit into the bush in the future.

"Good choice. Do you have a photo? Here's the 4100 in 30-06 I inherited from my Dad."

Mine's been rid a little harder than yours John. Has a vintage Kollmorgen 2.75 power scope on it.

Here is how I use it a lot:

I'd say you're right in your statement of field use:). Nothing wrong with good solid use, oh, and great pictures! I have a set on my quad and I may put a set on my mountain bike. Handle bar mounted rifle rack. For the 'thick' west coast conditions,:redface:I probably won't use my 4100. For the 'wet & thick', I picked up a Marlin 1895GS:p.

On mine, about a year before it was given to me, Dad had a similar looking K4 Weaver I believe but to assist to eye sight conditions he changed that for a 2.5-7 Micro-Trac which I still have on it. Even at that late date and time in his hunting years, he still 'mistrusted' scopes and their new fangled technology. As such, he opted for Weaver pivot mounts to allow quick access to the open sights if & when required.

The last workout mine got was a few years ago, on my first Alberta Mule Deer hunt with my Daughter & Son In Law.

Oh, as both our Daughter and Son are left handed, our Daughter has asked if I'd pass it down to our right handed Granddaughter so when my use of it is over, that'll be the 4100's next stop:).

My 700 "Mountain" rifle 30-06 with the tapered barrel and scope. Lightweight enough to carry, enough of a punch to deal with any critters I might stumble upon.

870 18" Express. From slugs to 00 buck to target load, super versatile.

For stomping through the bush, nothing. I really should buy a lever some day. Something in a 20" barrel with peep sight should be good. Normally I don't really carry anything because I can run faster than all my friends in case we run across a hungry something-or-other.

There is another choice I have for that purpose, but with some of the thick bush bashing around here, I'd probably end up pampering it too much. A model 71 deluxe in 348WCF. It'll get use, but something in a little less rugged enviornment.

I've been thinking about this again I take one rifle into the bush more than any other = my Marlin 1895GS in 45-70...

This pic is 2 years old...

Early Model 7 in .308, with iron sights and lots of Johnsons Paste Wax and an occasional dab of "Glow-In-The-Dark" paint from the Dollar Store on the sights.

Light, short, handy and shoots extremely well with everything from 150 gr. Nosler Partitions to 220 gr. Sierra RN (which do 2200'/sec out of the 18.5" barrel and are amazingly accurate). Works good on beavers, bears, and buffalos and probably some other stuff.

My walking around rifle, when I lived up north, was a CVA Kentucky rifle, caplock, in 45 cal. I usually kept it loaded with a 128 gr. RB and 25 gr. of fffG, but I also carried some heavier loads, about 70 gr. of ffG, kept in a 30-06 case, with a 9mm shell pushed over the top. Makes a great speedloader. I'd use a 250 gr. maxi with that load.

'Ol "303 good reasons" ... has kept company for 30 someodd years now.

A heavily bubba'd #4mk1 Long Branch. Six lbs. loaded. Folding stock to 28 inches. Flush mag. Battle sight zeroed at 50 yards, & the ladder for longer. Paper patched .308" 165gr tsx at 2350fps(.316"bore). In a custom canvas QR scabbard strapped to the canoe pack.

Always there if I need it, it's been bloodied only once in all those years. ...... I'm still here.

Yeah, I've got a problem.

It's in your safe and not mine! :D

And that's a problem I ;)can't/won't help you with. I foolishly parted with the first 71 I had:redface: and 10 minutes later started kicking my butt for doing so. It wasn't one of my smartest moves. There's a few guys on site that have PM'd me offers for it but this one may eventually end up in the coffin with me:D. In the meantime;), here's another out of safe picture for you plus a photo of some old 200gr Winchester Silvertips I've picked up to reload for it. These bullets are in addition to my supply of 200gr Hornady IL's, 220gr and 250gr Barnes originals.
