M305s....what to do? What to do right away?

Hello all! So I bought a new Norinco M305s and a Sage EBR stock(I know the stock cost 3X times the rifle) but I don't care. I love his rifle! My question is what should I upgrade right away and what can wait? I'm hear OP rod and spring, but why? Will it make a big difference at 200 yards or just improve action? What else would you do? Also, the mount I will be using is the laRue LT-139 cantaliver mounted backwards, what glass would you recommend for around 300$. Target shooting at 300 yards max.

1) The first thing you should do is to unitize or shim the gas system. That will ensure that it will run smoothly. Shimming is the easiest as you only need to get shims and Hungry sells them really cheap. Unitizing will require a someone with a welder who know what there doing. Both will need to have the flash hider removed and there are lots of videos on the wed to show how to do it. If your close to me i will welcome a helping hand ;)
2)The next and easier step is to get an upgraded op rod. There are many to chose from and it's more what makes you feel warm and fuzzy to decide what you want to put in your rifle as they all do the same thing.
3)The hardest upgrade to do is to align the barrel/receiver. This will require a barrel vice and action wrench, no easy to come by. The best way to get that dome is to attend a seminar if that's a possibility.
 
X2 First thing to do is leave the Sage in the box for a while and just go shoot the crap out of your Norc
 
1- oprod spring guide
2- shims if needed
3- peen for oprod guide if needed

As for the scope at 300$ bushnell elite tactical 10x ... Really the only option under 600$
I'm not sure but I think you still need some kind of mount for the scope with that sage chassi ... My 2 cents shoulda spent your money on glass before the stock , but I guess it's that second kind of cool thing eh!
 
ensure the gas system is tight shim if required... get a beeter op rod guide, if the triger is creaky buy a new triger and sear from treelinem14 for $50.
Make sure the headspace is safe, a $30 "field" gauge from brownells will do the trick, and lock tight the rear irons.

for glass.

$300 will get you the fallowing decent peices of glass:

Vortex Dimondback 3.5X10X50 with BDC redicual

A fixed power 10X 40 bushnell elite tactical,

Leupold riflemen 3-9 X40

burris full field2 3X9 with BP redicual
 
I would just check headspace, tighten gas assembly, trigger job on the stock chinese parts, eventually bolt replacement is nice but it sounds like you are well on your way to building a nice rifle.
 
They are a diamond in the rough (often, very rough), but the journey is more important than the destination! So enjoy the tweaking process.

Buy lots of ammo!

Interjecting here. Regarding scopes - what are some decent no-gunsmithing options available for the M-305?
 
First - Read the stickies! There's loads of good info in these and you can learn lots!

Second - Take advice from Hungry and others that have been around these and similar rifles for a long time and have much good advise.(fortunately for most of us, they are very kind at sharing their knowledge!)

Third - Buy lots of ammo and Shoot, Shoot, Shoot! These rifles are pure fun to shoot.

Enjoy and congrats on getting a "fun" yet effective piece of kit.
 
Thicker t- SHIRT HAR HAR HAR! I have been also looking for the best recoil butt stock.... The issue I find is the lack on places or knowing the places that sell parts and after market items for firearms in Canada. I have been eyeing the Magpul PRS, no recoil but the cheek piece and butt stco k are adjustable. You can buy a thicker rubber pad which will assist in the recoil..BUT adds 1.6 pounds to your battle rifle.. In terms of Made in Canada upgrades? ya'll may want check out m14.ca I just bought the stock and a whole bunch of other atachments to really kit up the M14. A lot of money... But I think quite worth it.
 
Clean it thoroughly and shoot it before you do anything. Gives you a base line for accuracy and function for comparing whatever mods you feel like doing to the basic rifle. As in, did shimming the gas system, for example, change anything?
 
Yes it slams back like it was designed to do. That thing sounds like a solution looking for a problem. Started shooting FN's when I was 13-14 years old and didn't find the recoil that bad then, I find the M305 recoil even less.
