Finally looking at adding a 1911 to my collection. Everyone seems to love the Ruger SR1911 and it seems to be a good value. Just can't decide on either a full size or a commander.

I would love some feedback from the 1911 enthusiast on what they think of the Ruger SR1911 and which barrel length they prefer.

I went full size - love it.

1911 purists say the Commander is not balanced right.
Technical accuracy and muzzle speed differences are marginal.

Here's why I went full size
-Longer barrel means longer sight radius - Easier to line up on target
-Heavier nose means recoil easier to manage

Commander advantages are more for those who carry them all day long.

As far as the Ruger SR1911 itself. The good ones are great. I recommend you hand pick yours and inspect it carefully (ie no mail order). As fitting and casting quality may vary from one to another.
It's ok if your Ruger rattles out of the box. You can still pick the one with the tightest slide.

You don't want yours to look like that (casting issues around the beavertail).

When I think 1911, I picture a .45 with a 5" barrel. I wouldn't consider anything else, but that's me.

+1 for the 5" sr1911. I love mine and it will never leave my collection. Though i bought mine before the commander came out.. They DO look pretty bad ass.

Ruger SR1911 are a great pistol. But it`s best to pick one out in person, so you don`t get a shaker and a rattler.
Ruger`s QC has been reported to be lacking, as they are struggling to pump out guns to satisfy the public`s demand, lately.

I thoroughly enjoy shooting both, I have a lot more govt models then commanders, they both have their place. If I only could have one 1911 it would be govt length, but I couldn't just have one, for I want them all. I only wish I had 12.6 there would be an officers acp in the stable as well.

Thanks everyone. I was leaning towards a full size before the commander came out. Maybe I'll have to add a commander to my collection later on. Now I just have to find a sr1911 in stock at a local shop. That might be a challenge.

Mine the slide was loose and the trigger was rattling but just after a mag it tighten up and the trigger stopped rattling. Damn good pistol to own, Like mine!

I prefer full length, the Commander 1911's always looked a little short... just doesn't look as nice to my eyes.

I'm the opposite, the Commander length has always looked much more balanced to my eye. That said, I bought a Commander first, then sold it for a 5" 1911. The 5" model simply handles and shoots better for me, regardless of how much I prefer the looks of the shorter gun.

is it true the commander has less accuracy due to the barrel length? do you notice a big difference in the muzzle flip?

The barrel length has little to do with it, but the shorter sight radius was noticeable to me. The commander does have more muzzle flip, but it wasn't terrible. I find 9mm out of my G19 snappier than .45 out of the commander.

Thanks Mark. I still leaning towards the full size. But I appreciate your feedback

Ruger full size 1911 is engineered as combat pistol true to John Browning's original design. Ruger manufacturing specifications provide for a little play in the slide to ensure functionality in all types of conditions - with all types of ammo. The specifications are published by Ruger, and there are zillions of posts on this subject in the US forums. Is a stunning and well received pistol, commonly saluted for its handling and flawless performance considering the low price. The slide tolerance is desireable in a combat 1911, and built in. So don't worry about the so called "rattle" - because that's the sound of dependability. If the slide adjustment bothers you, and you want a real tight action for some reason, well, there are other 1911 options - but Ruger followed the original 1911 design concept with a few modern upgrades. As others pointed out, full size is the original design and means less felt recoil and easier target acquisition. Some like the commander for its shorter barrel regardless of those considerations.

The rattle was the only negative comment i heard about the Ruger SR1911. Thanks for the information. I'm glad to hear it won't affect the performance of the gun. I'm looking into other options if I can't find a Ruger available. What would you recommend around the same price point?
