Ruger SR1911 - quick review

Well I have had mine for about a month, 3 trips to the range, shooting both factory and target reloads. This gun shoots better than I do!!! I side by side compared in to my Para GI Expert and maybe it's the better sights, but it is accurate. The grips on mine continued to work loose after shooting so I replaced the grips and the hex screws with a nice set from Pachmeyer.

Shooting target loads it is smooth and comfortable, on par with my Beretta 92fs in 9mm. A few more trips out and if it remains this good I may just sell the Para !

A few mods done already. Full length guide rod, VZ grips and a strip of grip tape for the front strap. Next I want to get an ambi safety afterall if I end up using this gun in IPSC. I'm thinking of getting the SS Ed Brown safety and slide release. I wonder if it would be better or worse with the stainless bits vs the stock black. I think the OE grips look better but I need the traction.

I have also had mine for a couple of months, only about 200 rounds down the pipe. Functioned flawlessly until the other day, when the front sight blade sheared off at the sight base during shooting. This has happened to a few other people as well, so I was aware that this was not a unique occurrence. Before the questions come in, no, it has never been dropped, bumped against anything, nor have I attempted to adjust the front sight.

The slide is very slightly loose, but otherwise the fit and finish are very good and it seems very accurate. The magazines are very well made, and make my SS Wilson Combat mags look cheap by comparison. The sight failure is a minor annoyance, I will try to get Ruger to send a replacement or just buy a quality alloy steel front sight to replace the factory MIM blade. The sight may have had an unseen flaw, but there are enough other identical failures out there to make me wonder if there was an installation issue which micro fractured some sights at the factory. Perhaps they are somewhat too brittle for this application - time will tell.

All in all, I am pleased with the pistol and will simply replace the FS and keep shooting to see if anything else will break. I am not going to whine about this little mishap.

The front sight is a Novak's too right, like the rear? Maybe a Novak's QC problem. Well, one more reason to change out the sights to a Bomar style competition sight like I've been wanting to.

There are conflicting reports as to whether Novak actually supplies the sights or Ruger manufactures both sights themselves under license. Whatever the case may be, I am sure Ruger will replace them.

Tighter groups and more importantly the way the gun felt especially for recoil management for double taps. Crispness of the trigger break.

The stock recoil spring is much heavier in the Ruger than other 1911s... like a Remington R1E and Colt Gold Cup. Not meant for weak wristed girly men, LoL. ;-)

nice review, a fair assessment

Mine has never been the slide to frame rattler that folks speak of. I never get why folks are so concerned about slide to frame fit. Has nothing to do with accuracy on John Browning's brilliant design - sights are on slide, barrel is locked up in slide, so free float on frame has no bearing on accuracy, within reason of course.

Well said "CdnInAz." Completely agree, and your experience with +12 thousand rounds speaks clearly. Some commentors may not be aware the original engineering specification for the combat 1911 as designed by John Browning provided for the tolerances some call a "rattle." The tolerance is engineered into the combat 1911 to ensure dependability in all types of field conditions and varying ammo. There are other options for those who would prefer a tighter range pistol to the combat design of the Ruger 1911.

Still love it every bit as much as day 1. A few small changes, got some Ed Brown bits for it - SS slide stop, ambi safety (yeah I know I said I dislike these but I want to use it for my BB course and maybe IPSC), main spring, and got the stainless rebuild kit (just used the pins for now). I think it looks amazing now. Side profile is consistent, all stainless, and all black from the rear (sight, back of trigger, safety, mainspring housing):

just got my Ruger SR 1911 today and took it out to the range.
very impressed with it.

while the trigger does have a little bit of a loose rattle to it the gun was hitting and grouping hell'a nice right out of the box.

really happy with my purchase!

you dont really need that ambi saftey for IPSC, I didnt have one for quite a while and only put it on because it let me do a different style swap to my weak hand that I liked better

Yup, I found this out during the BB course. I was told before that the safety needs to be disabled by the shooting hand, so it wouldn't work for weakhand. But that's not true.
