Hey folks im going to be purchasing a rem 700 SPS tactical AAC-SD in . 308 and dropping it into MDT Tac 21 chassis and im looking for a scope for it. This will used for target shooting upwards of 1000 yards.

Keep in mind there is a little leeway with the price but i am trying to keep the total build under $3500

Thanks for the input.

If you look hard and be patience you might be able to find an used Nightforce for around $1700 plus or minus $100 but if you want something new you can't beat Sightron S3 for around $1k, if you are looking for some European scopes be prepare to spend a good amount of money.

I am sure other optics guru will chime in and offer some advice.

I'd recommend a Zeiss Conquest but unless you get at least a 20moa rail, it might have to small an elevation range. I have one on my 6.5X55, but only intend on shooting up to 1km, and if my calculations are correct, 0-1000m will be fine. Probably would have been better served with a 25moa, as I have a bit left on the elevation dial to go down. Cost me between 1100-1300 for both a 6.5-20 and farrel 20moa base.

Never used a Sightron, but you will be recommended to look in that direction as well.

Get a list of options, determine (even by contacting dealers and manufacturers and personal mathematic work) if they will fulfill your requirements and sort out accordingly.
I've been considering a 7mm Remington Express, or larger for longer distance (not that I have such a range to enjoy it), but it'd probably wear at least a NF NXS, S&B PMII or Vortex Razor - all choices between 2600 and 3400 dollars, which is why I'm still only "considering."

Agreed, the Conquest is a very nice scope as well I have one in 3-9X40 and loving it.

I did bought my first Sightron S3 after some extensive research as the S3 8-32x has 70moa of adjustments and their 6-24x has 100moa while the Conquest 6.5-20x has only 45moa of adjustments besides the magnification its an one inch tube vs 30mm.

Don't get me wrong I like my Conquest very much but depending on your need neither scope will disappoint you.

A Rapid Z1000 reticle is designed for the 308 and eliminates need for high MOA adjustment but you are correct that with a standard Zplex there wouldn't be sufficient MOA adjustment without a rail.

what type of target shooting?

Metal plates set up in the bush. we currently have a spot we have ranged to a max of 1070 yards

And thanks for the input guys it sounds like ill be leaning towards the sightron SIIISS 6-24X50 LRMOA for prices and features and i get to try my buddies this weekend on his 110 BA so we shall see how that goes.

Thanks for the input everybody now to double check if i picked the right chassis

I am biased against the 308win: For the reloader who also shoots long distance, I don't know why (except availability) why 308 is more popular than a 6.5 or 7mm. For the guy who doesn't reload, 308win is an obvious choice because of the wide range of ammo options. But to get the same long distance efficiency, as a 140gr in 6.5 or 170gr in 7mm, the 308 needs to be pushing about 205gr bullets - case capacity, action length and resulting decreased velocity all work against that cartridge.

To the ranges you mentioned and even beyond, the 308 is not best, just satisfactory. The right stock is one that fits you.

I just ordered a Vortex Viper PST in 4-16X50 with the mil reticle and mil turrets for my light tactical/precision gun. I caught it on sale, but they're right around $1K at site sponsors. 16X max might be a little light for 1000Y, but they make one in 6-24X50 for around $1100.

As to New Camper's post above... availability is the thing. Both of ammo, and rifles. I reload exclusively for my bolt guns, but it's hard to find a ready-made tac rifle chambered in a 6.5 or 7mm cartridge. .308's are everywhere. Lots of loads with the 155 or 168/169gr bullets are supersonic at 1000 too. True that they give up some BC advantages to the sleeker .264 and .284 bullets, but lots of shooters get it done with the .308.
